The next day, just before noon, Caleb looked around the private dining room. There’s no sign of Rebecca. He checked his phone again. Dr. Palmer would be there soon. Was Rebecca really going to bail on him again?
He had worked so hard to convince Dr. Palmer to come, even promised him a surprise. If Rebecca didn’t show up, all that effort would go to waste.
Trying not to let his frustration show, Caleb stepped out into the hallway and called her.
The call connected quickly. Caleb frowned. “Rebecca, are you on your way?”
There was a pause, then her quiet voice. “Yeah, I’m on my way.”
Relief washed over him. “Good. Dr. Palmer’s almost here too. He’s only staying for a bit, so try to hurry. I... we’re waiting for you.”
About ten minutes later, a Rolls-Royce stopped outside a restaurant near the back gate of Larkhaven College.
Stephen raised his eyebrows and turned to the back seat. “Want me to go with you?”
Dr. Palmer waved him off. “I’m good. You’re way too flashy, stink like rich people. My students would be so nervous around you, they wouldn’t even know where to put their hands.”
Stephen laughed and sniffed his jacket. “That’s not money you’re smelling. It’s the new cologne Cindy got me.”
Liana smiled. “Cindy’s back?”
“She got back from her trip last night. She’ll be at the hotel later, too.”
“That’s great. We haven’t seen her in ages. We really miss her.”
When Dr. Palmer walked into the private room, his students immediately straightened up, dropping whatever they were doing.
Caleb checked his phone again, frowning. Still no sign of Rebecca.
Trying to push away his worries, he stood up and gently set a birthday hat on Dr. Palmer’s head. Then he talked him into blowing out the candles and making a wish.
Dr. Palmer pretended to grumble about how silly it was, but he still played along, just as he always did.
