Lottie didn’t even realize what she was saying. Samantha had been in the hospital for a whole week, and this was actually Lottie’s first time visiting.
With Samantha sitting right there, Rebecca knew better than to argue. She kept her tone even. “I’ll be back soon.”
Since Rebecca didn’t push back, Lottie grew even more smug.
She hung up and didn’t bother lowering her voice in front of Samantha. “Honestly, she’s unbelievable. It’s the weekend, and instead of taking care of you, she goes off to some friend’s birthday party. And the caregiver she hired is completely unreliable.”
“That’s not fair. Rebecca’s been running herself ragged, going back and forth between home and the hospital. She’s exhausted.” Samantha jumped in to defend her daughter.
Of course, Lottie was her daughter too, so Samantha tried to keep things balanced. Her voice stayed gentle.
Lottie just pouted. “She doesn’t even have a job. What’s she so busy with?”
“Your sister and Bruce are getting engaged next month. There’s a ton to organize. I’m not well enough to help, and Bruce is always tied up with work, so your sister’s handling everything on her own,” Samantha explained.
Lottie fought the urge to roll her eyes.
An engagement party? Lottie doubted it would even happen.
Everyone at the company knew Bruce and Sonja were close. The rumor mill said Sonja was Bruce’s first love, the one he’d never gotten over. It was like they were living out the whole childhood sweethearts, second-chance romance thing.
And Lottie believed it too.
Rebecca had chased after Bruce for years, practically throwing herself at him, and he’d never warmed up to her. But the second Sonja showed up, Bruce couldn’t take his eyes off her.
That’s what first loves do to people.
And let’s be real, Rebecca couldn’t compete. Sonja had her beat in looks, brains, and family background. If you had to choose between them, everone would know who to pick.
Just thinking about it made Lottie smile.
If Rebecca ended up dumped... well, suddenly Lottie didn’t seem so bad by comparison.
That thought finally made her feel a little better.
Samantha didn’t read too much into it. She just figured Lottie was still annoyed with Rebecca, so she asked, “Lottie, have you been busy lately?”
What she really wanted to ask was why Lottie had taken so long to come to the hospital, but she was afraid Lottie would think she was being blamed for something.
Lottie hesitated. “Yeah, I’ve been busy.”
Busy trying to get close to Sonja, but that still counted.
Word was, Sonja was expanding her team and looking for a department assistant besides senior staff.
