Still, it felt way too coincidental.
Stephen smiled, as if he hadn’t heard her question or maybe just decided to ignore it. Instead, he asked, “You two heading out?”
Rebecca answered honestly, “We’re going to grab dinner.” After a moment, she added, “Would you like to join us?”
She doubted a busy guy like him would have time, but since he was her boss, it felt polite to ask. To her surprise, Stephen nodded. “Sure, I’ll join you. My treat. Let’s just call it a little early luck for the contract.”
The restaurant wasn’t far, and they got there in less than half an hour. Since it was a weekday, they didn’t have to wait. Still, it was a popular spot and all the private rooms were already booked, so they had to sit in the main dining area.
The three of them had just settled in and reached for their menus when Justin’s phone rang. He frowned, picking it up. “Hey, babe, you’re sick? Oh no, I’ll come home and take care of you right away.”
He hung up and looked at Stephen and Rebecca, apologetic. “Mr. Duncan, Ms. Harper, I’m so sorry. My girlfriend’s sick, she’s waiting for me at home. I need to go. Sorry again, let’s eat together another time.”
He grabbed his bag and rushed out, leaving just Stephen and Rebecca at the table.
Rebecca felt a little awkward, but since they were already there, dinner was happening. With just the two of them, they wouldn’t need much. She ordered two of the restaurant’s signature dishes and handed the menu to Stephen.
He smiled. “You don’t have to worry about saving me money. Order whatever you want.”
She said, “Mr. Duncan, it’s only us. We can’t eat that much.”
Stephen paused, looking up from the menu. “Rebecca, can I make a suggestion?”
Rebecca sat up a little straighter. “Sure.”
The way she looked so serious was kind of... cute.
