Betrayed and Dumped: She Rose Stronger Than Ever novel Chapter 44

Kelley froze for a second, then her lips curved into a warm smile. “Rebecca, is that you? It’s been ages. I’ve missed you.” She came closer, reached out, and gently patted the back of Rebecca’s hand.

“It really has been a while. Are you here for dinner too, Mrs. Lamont?” Rebecca kept her tone polite and pulled her hand back without making a fuss.

To be honest, Kelley had always treated her well, nothing like those wealthy ladies who nitpicked about her background. When she was dating Bruce, Kelley would constantly remind him to take better care of Rebecca, to not always be so cold.

The whole engagement idea? That was Kelley’s suggestion to begin with. She said they were both getting older, so it made sense to get engaged this year and married the next. Because of all that, Rebecca was still respectful toward Kelley, but it wasn't like before. They could never be as close as they used to be.

Rebecca’s smile looked a little stiff, and Kelley noticed right away. Bruce must have already told her about breaking off the engagement. It was no wonder she seemed distant.

Kelley had seen everything Rebecca did for the company, and for her son. That was exactly why she’d never stepped in to meddle with their relationship. There were plenty of rich ladies out there trying to set Bruce up with their daughters, but Kelley just had to take one look at them to know they weren’t even in the same league as Rebecca. Those girls were all delicate and spoiled, meant to be treated like fragile treasures, but Rebecca could handle anything, whether it was a boardroom meeting or a home-cooked meal. Sure, her background wasn’t impressive, but that just made her easier to get along with.

But the most important thing was, Rebecca really loved Bruce. She would have given up anything for him. It was a shame, really. Sometimes people just aren’t meant to be.

Sonja had been Bruce’s dream girl when he was young. Now that she was back, there was no longer a place for Rebecca. If Sonja was just pretty, Kelley might have talked her son out of it, told him not to be so shallow. But Sonja wasn’t just beautiful, she was more capable than Rebecca, and came from a better family too. There was nothing to argue about.

Thinking all this, Kelley found herself looking at Rebecca with a bit of sympathy. “That’s right, I’m here with some friends. Are you alone tonight?”

Rebecca shook her head. “No, I’m with a friend too.” She turned away. “I should get going.”
