Bruce frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Kelley glanced at him. “When Rebecca comes back from her break, she’s going to find out about Sonja. Sooner or later, things between you and Sonja are going to move forward. You’re not seriously thinking of keeping Rebecca at the company, are you?”
“In my opinion, you should just let Rebecca go. Give her a generous severance package. It’s the least you can do after everything she’s done for the company.”
Bruce’s eyes darkened, a hint of red at the corners. “No. I’m not firing her.”
He had already told Rebecca they were calling off the engagement for now. If he let her go from work too, that would mean cutting her out of his life completely. He couldn’t bring himself to do it.
Leaning back on the sofa, Bruce rubbed his temples. “Mom, stop worrying about me. I know what I’m doing.”
Kelley was quiet for a few seconds. Then she said, “Your grandfather is already trying to convince your dad to let Zoey run the company.”
Zoey was Bruce’s half-sister. Back then, Hector hated the daughter his first wife gave him, and she refused to have another child, so he cheated with Kelley. He kept Kelley and Bruce on the outside for over a decade. It was only after divorcing his first wife that Hector finally brought them into the Lamont family.
In the whole Lamont family, only Hector treated them decently. Everyone else either ignored them or made it clear they weren’t welcome. Cooper, Bruce’s grandfather, had even said straight out that Bruce would never be allowed to work at Lamont Inc.
That’s why Bruce was so determined to start his own company after college. He wanted to prove to the Lamonts that he and his mother were worth something. NovaStack Cloud was making waves in the industry, but Cooper still didn’t care.
But if Bruce married Sonja, with the Campbell family’s support, everything would change.
Kelley let out a long sigh. “I’m not going to pressure you. Just think it through.”
She hung up.
Bruce reached for his cigarettes, shook one out, and lit it. The smoke curled in front of his face, hiding his cold expression.
