Lottie let out a mocking laugh. “Oh, that’s right. Rebecca’s getting engaged to Mr. Lamont. I almost forgot.”
Samantha’s brows drew together, a hint of annoyance flickering across her face. “Lottie, how could you forget about Rebecca’s engagement?” Her tone wasn’t sharp, more like a gentle scolding, but Lottie just got even more annoyed.
Engagement? Please. Bruce doesn’t even like Rebecca. That engagement is bound to fall apart. And Bruce will dump her sooner or later.
With nothing left to say, Lottie found an excuse and left the Harper family house.
That afternoon, the caretaker Rebecca had hired came by. With someone to keep her mom company and chat with her, Rebecca finally felt at ease. She grabbed her books and headed out to a nearby café to study.
Rebecca was hoping to get into Dr. Palmer’s part-time graduate program. It was designed for people who wanted to keep working while earning their degree. You got both a diploma and a degree, so it was super popular for anyone looking to boost their credentials these days. But even though it was part-time, getting in wasn’t easy. The competition was fierce.
It had been five years since Rebecca left college. During those years, her professional skills had only grown sharper with experience, but she hadn’t touched basic subjects in ages. Math especially. All those theorems and formulas had totally slipped her mind. Getting back up to speed was no small feat.
Luckily, there were tons of online resources now. Following along with video lessons, it didn’t take Rebecca long to find her groove again.
By the time the sky outside turned dark and her oversized coffee cup was empty, she’d finished everything she planned to study for the day. Rebecca stretched and gazed out the window, a deep sense of satisfaction settling in her chest.
It had been ages since she felt this steady. Back when she was wrapped up in her feelings for Bruce, she was always met with his cold shoulder, and that left her constantly on edge, never sure where she stood. Now, she realized that bad love is like a thorn—if you don’t pull it out, it hurts more with every step you take. Once you finally yank it free, suddenly every direction feels open and easy.
To keep herself on track, Rebecca decided she’d hit the Larkhaven College library every weekend from now on.
