She’d even sent the engagement gifts back. That pretty much said it all. Bruce had never been the kind of guy who knew how to make a girl feel better. All those years with Rebecca, every time they’d fought or even just disagreed, it was always Rebecca who apologized first. No matter who was at fault, she was the one to reach out and make things right. Now, when he actually wanted to comfort her, he was completely lost.
For the first time, Bruce found himself genuinely admiring Morris. That guy always seemed to know exactly what to say to girls. Bruce pressed his lips together, thinking hard about what to do next. Finally, he said, “Rebecca, I got the engagement gifts you sent back. You really didn’t have to. It’s just... temporary…”
Before he could finish, a voice chimed in from his office. “Bruce, sorry, I didn’t realize you were on the phone. I’ll come back later.”
It was Sonja. Rebecca let out a bitter little laugh. Of course Bruce let Sonja walk into his office without knocking. He even let her call him Bruce at work. It was obvious who got special treatment.
Bruce covered the receiver and called out, “It’s fine, Sonja. We can talk now.” He wanted to find a reason to end the call smoothly, but before he could, Rebecca had already hung up.
She really was angry. He’d have to ask Morris for advice on how to make up with a girl. Maybe that guy really did have all the answers.
Sonja noticed the look on his face and teased him, “What’s wrong? Were you just talking to your girlfriend?”
Bruce felt like his brain had short-circuited. His hand curled into a fist on the side of his chair. Did Sonja somehow know about him and Rebecca? That couldn’t be. He’d already told Lottie to keep quiet and even warned his friends not to say anything. But who knew, maybe someone had let it slip.
Sonja burst out laughing. “Relax, I was just kidding. Kelley told me you don’t have a girlfriend. She’s actually stressed about how to set you up on blind dates.”
Bruce finally let out a breath. “I’ve just been busy getting my business off the ground. Didn’t really have time to date.”
Sonja’s eyes sparkled, and she gave him a knowing smile. “Same here. I was too busy with school to think about relationships.” They left it at that, neither of them saying more about what the future might hold.
