Rebecca thought Cindy was taking her out to a regular restaurant, so she was surprised when they pulled up to a private club instead. She had never been somewhere so upscale before and couldn’t help glancing around in awe.
At the entrance, Cindy strode in like she owned the place, rattled off their reservation, and a ridiculously handsome waiter led them to a private room. He set the menus down in front of them with a smooth smile.
“My treat tonight. Rebecca, just order whatever you want,” Cindy said, giving her a confident little nod.
Rebecca blinked at the way Cindy used her name so casually.
Noticing her reaction, Cindy raised an eyebrow. “I checked with my brother. We’re the same age, you know. Your birthday’s just a couple months earlier than mine. So when we’re not at work, I can call you Rebecca, right?”
Rebecca couldn’t help laughing a little. “Sure, that’s fine.”
After they ordered, Rebecca sipped her water and watched Cindy across the table. Cindy looked so bright and lively. She seemed like she’d make a fun friend.
Friend…
Rebecca tightened her grip on her glass. She used to treat Lottie like a little sister when they were kids, then as her best friend when they grew up. In the end, all she got was betrayal. That friendship, just like her last relationship, had both ended in heartbreak.
Thinking about it, Rebecca dropped her gaze for a moment.
Before she knew it, the food arrived. They started eating and chatting, and Cindy turned out to be an open book. Even though they’d only known each other for a couple of weeks, Cindy just spilled everything, no filter at all. The good stuff, the bad, her proudest moments, her most embarrassing ones—she laid it all out there.
Rebecca found herself grinning, sometimes even laughing out loud with Cindy. For a while, it felt easy.
As dinner was winding down, Cindy rested her chin on her hand and looked at her. “So what about you, Rebecca?”
“Me?” Rebecca set down her fork and dabbed at her mouth with a napkin. “My life’s honestly pretty boring. Nothing exciting to tell.”
