Bruce headed down to the sales department, scanning for Rebecca, but she was nowhere to be seen. He tried the research and development office next, but she wasn’t there either. Was she in a meeting? After a month away, it made sense she’d have a lot to catch up on. Maybe she’d been stuck in a conference room all day. Bruce checked each meeting room, peering through the frosted glass, but Rebecca was still missing.

Maybe she’d left for the day? He glanced at his watch. There was still half an hour before the workday ended. A wave of anxiety hit him. He pulled out his phone and dialed Rebecca’s number. The call rang through, but no one picked up. Then came the automated message, looping over and over. “Sorry, the person you’re calling is unavailable.”

Bruce’s expression darkened. Back upstairs, he rapped his fingers impatiently on Kane’s desk. “Get Rebecca in here. I want to see her.”

Kane, mid-typing, stared up at him in confusion. “Mr. Lamont, Rebecca already left.”

She left early? Bruce’s face tightened, his jaw clenching. “Who said she could leave before the end of the day?”

Kane was completely thrown. He had no idea what was going on. Then a worrying thought crossed his mind. He cleared his throat, bracing himself. “Mr. Lamont, she resigned. Didn’t you know?”

It felt like the world stopped for a moment. Bruce struggled to process what he’d just heard. His voice came out rough. “Who authorized her resignation?”

Kane scratched his head. “She said you approved it.”

Bruce let out a cold, humorless laugh. Since when did Rebecca start making things up like that? He shut his eyes, trying to keep his temper in check. “Bring Megan from HR.”

Megan looked totally lost when Bruce demanded to know why she’d processed Rebecca’s resignation. “I thought we’d discussed it and you’d signed off.”

Bruce’s temples pounded. He wanted to shout, but he forced himself to stay calm. “I never gave her permission to quit.”
