Betrayed and Dumped: She Rose Stronger Than Ever novel Chapter 68

Bruce knew deep down that Rebecca’s talk about quitting wasn’t really about the job. She’d never cared about status or money. What she wanted, from the very beginning, was his heart. He was sure of it. Once she cooled off, she’d come back. Bruce didn’t doubt for a second that Rebecca needed him.

“Yeah, I guess so,” Bruce replied, his tone casual.

Sonja shook her head. “You don’t need to guess. She’ll definitely come back.”

Bruce glanced at her, a little surprised. “How can you be so sure?”

Did Sonja know about him and Rebecca?

Sonja grinned. “It’s the non-compete, obviously. Everyone at the company signs one. I did when I joined, too. I’ve read it. Basically, every company in the industry is covered. If Ms. Harper wants to keep working in fintech, she has no choice but to leave town.”

That hit Bruce like a bucket of cold water. Of course. Why hadn’t he thought of that? He loosened his tie a bit and said, “Rebecca won’t move. She needs to take care of her mom after the surgery. She wouldn’t leave her right now.”

Looking at it that way, Rebecca would probably come back even sooner than he’d expected. The cloud that had been hanging over him these past few days seemed to vanish all at once. Bruce glanced over at Sonja, taking her in. She was even sharper than he’d realized. Once again, he found himself drawn to her confidence and charm.

“Oh, by the way, my mom’s birthday is this Saturday. I wanted to invite you and your parents,” Sonja said, handing him three invitations. “Can you give these to your mom and dad for me?”

“Sure, no problem.”

That night, Bruce drove back to his family’s house. His dad was working late, so only his mom, Kristin, was home. After dinner, Bruce handed her the invitations.

Kristin opened one and smiled. “Avery called earlier to tell me about this. I already talked to your dad. We’ll both be there.”

She set the invitation aside, then looked at Bruce. “What about you? Are you going?”

Lately, Kristin and Avery had been seeing each other a lot, meeting up for afternoon tea almost every week. Even Alan, Avery’s husband, had started talking business with Bruce’s dad. Kristin understood what was happening. The Campbell family was interested in Bruce. She just didn’t know how Bruce felt about it.

If he went to the party, it would pretty much mean he was open to the idea of being matched with Sonja. If he didn’t, it would be obvious he still wasn’t over Rebecca.
