[Sonja was actually engaged to my cousin. They were supposed to get officially engaged this year, but then he found out her degree was fake. She paid for it, and every paper or article with her name on it was written by someone else. Also, she had a pretty crazy life when she was studying overseas, too. My cousin didn’t waste any time breaking things off with her. Guess inly someone stupid like your ex would think she’s some kind of prize.]
Rebecca was stunned for a moment, but the feeling faded as quickly as it came. Bruce and Sonja… they were basically strangers to her now. She didn’t care who was lying to whom. None of it mattered anymore.
She just typed back a quick “Oh” and ended the chat, putting her focus back on her studies.
Cindy couldn’t help but be impressed. Rebecca was seriously strong. She could cut it off without looking back. Even hearing that her ex had been played, Rebecca didn’t gloat or say anything nasty. She just gave a calm “oh” and went on with her life.
Cindy thought to herself, if she couldn’t have Rebecca as a sister-in-law, being best friends with her would be pretty great too.
Rebecca kept studying until eleven. After washing up, she crawled into bed and scrolled through her phone to unwind. As she refreshed her social media, a new post from Lottie’s private account popped up. She hadn’t gone looking for it. The app just pushed it onto her timeline. She sighed and shook her head, half amused.
Her feelings about Lottie were a tangled mess now. Part of her was hurt that Lottie had gotten close to Sonja behind her back. But at the same time, Lottie wasn’t just a friend, she was family, closer than a real sister. Rebecca couldn’t just cut her off in her heart. Her mom’s health was shaky, too, and Rebecca didn’t want to add any more stress. If she could, she’d rather keep things civil with Lottie, at least on the surface.
[So happy to be at my boss’ mom’s birthday party. My boss and I are basically besties these days!]
The boss was obviously Sonja. Rebecca zoomed in on the photos and started swiping through. Every single one had Bruce and Sonja in it. Sometimes they stood close, looking like a couple. In others, Sonja was gazing up at Bruce with soft eyes. In one, Avery was holding Bruce’s arm, introducing him to guests, while Sonja stood by, smiling and looking shy.
It all made sense now. Bruce and Sonja were officially together. Avery was using her birthday party to announce Bruce as her daughter’s boyfriend. They’d only just broken up, and now he was already flaunting his new relationship. Didn’t he care that people might call him out?
