Even Rebecca’s best friend, Lottie, had gotten a little salty for a while, complaining behind her back that Rebecca ditched her old friends as soon as she made new ones. So when Penny stood up for Rebecca now, nobody was really shocked.
Bruce looked annoyed. He gave Penny a cold glance. “It doesn’t matter who brought in the client. They’re the company’s client. Since Rebecca was handling the Meridian Tech project before, it’s your job as her assistant to organize everything from the past three years and send it over to Dr. Campbell.”
Penny just stared at him, stunned. Her face drained of color. She pressed her lips together. “But Ms. Harper hasn’t left the company. Why isn’t the project staying with her?”
Honestly, everyone else wanted to ask the same thing, but nobody had the nerve. When Penny actually said it out loud, a few people even shot her a look of respect.
“Penny, right?” Sonja asked, giving her a small, calm smile. “You’ve got it wrong. Mr. Lamont asked me to take over the project, but it’s not about stealing Ms. Harper’s credit. We all know how much she’s done for the company. No one’s going to forget that. She’s been working herself to the bone. She deserves a break. While she’s on leave this month, I’ll handle the project. Once she’s back, it goes straight to her again.”
Penny and the others just blinked, surprised. Was it really that simple?
Penny bit her lip and muttered, “Okay.” She slumped back into her chair, still looking frustrated.
Bruce still didn’t look happy. He was just about to scold Penny again when Sonja caught his eye and gave him a gentle, reassuring wink. His anger faded almost instantly. He pressed his lips together. “Rebecca is just a director, and Dr. Campbell here is our new VP.”
When Rebecca first joined, she was Bruce’s assistant. Later, she moved to R&D as an engineer. Two years ago, she transferred to sales as the director. Even though she was only a director, everyone knew she basically ran the place under Mr. Lamont. She was the real number two, and everyone expected her to be the next VP.
Last month, rumor had it that Rebecca would get promoted to VP as soon as she got back from her business trip. No one saw it coming when Dr. Campbell got the position instead.
Now, after hearing Mr. Lamont’s sharp tone, everyone was on edge. What was going on? Had he fallen out with Rebecca? She was one of the company’s pillars. Everyone had seen how much she’d given over the years. Why was he suddenly freezing her out?
