Chapter 216
“I know.” My steps faltered violently. “It was an accident.”
I said it lightly, but the fingers holding my bag dug unconsciously into my palm.
Zane walked over slowly, stopping in front of me, his thumb brushing the red corner of my eye.
“Haven’t you ever suspected anything?”
My hands trembled uncontrollably.
How could I not have suspected?
I was too young when my parents died, only five. Of course I believed what the adults told me.
As I grew older, the question surfaced in my mind again and again.
Narcotics officers… died in an ‘accident‘ on their way home after a mission…..
Those three factors combined… it never sounded right.
But the officers who investigated their deaths were all Uncle officers who were close to my parents.
They’d cried genuine tears at my parents‘ funeral.
I truly believed they’d done their best.
The case was either a genuine accident, or the other side was too powerful, too skilled, leaving no trace to follow.
I sniffed and looked up at Zane. “What are you trying to say?”
“Lately, I’ve been trying every way possible to find you.” Zane spoke slowly. “While searching for you, I… incidentally uncovered some things from back then. Clues about your parents‘ deaths.”
“I’m certain your parents‘ deaths were absolutely not an accident,” Zane stated with conviction.
Suspecting it myself was one thing.
Being told the truth so abruptly was another.
My body swayed slightly. My eyes fixed urgently on Zane. “What clues?”
I waited, barely breathing, for his answer, afraid to miss a single word.
Whoever was responsible, I would have my revenge for Mom and Dad, even if it destroyed us both.
They’d dedicated their lives to their duty. Their deaths deserved to be clear and unequivocal.
I wanted my parents to rest in peace.
Seeing I was finally emotionally engaged, knowing this mattered deeply to her, Zane thought for a moment. “I’m still following the leads. Getting concrete proof will take some time.”
Disappointment flashed in my eyes, but I knew this couldn’t be rushed. I pressed my lips together. “This is very important to me. If you find anything, please, tell me immediately…”

Chapter 216
“I can.” Zane looked down at me. “But I have one condition.”
I’d pretty much guessed.
But the divorce was settled. As long as he wasn’t asking me to remarry him, if it meant finding out the truth about my parents‘ deaths, I could agree for
now.
I clenched my fist. “Anything except remarrying. You can ask for anything else.”
He wasn’t angered. His expression remained gentle.
“I want you to move back in. But don’t worry, we can sleep in separate rooms. Just like before.”
Hearing this, I didn’t refuse immediately.
I calculated when Gavin would be back, weighing my options. “Can I have three days to think about it?”
I knew if there was something wrong with my parents‘ deaths, it must be connected to that drug case from all those years ago.
But on my own, I’d never find anything.
Still, anything Zane could uncover, Gavin could probably dig deeper and faster, if he was willing to help.
I wanted to ask Gavin first.
A soft laugh escaped him. “Waiting for your brother to return, to ask for his help first?”
The Windsor Group’s project abroad was well–known in the industry.
