Chapter 219
Zane pulled out the chair I used to always sit in, a smile on his face that was almost eager to please. “Elara, try it. Let me know if it’s to your taste.”
“Alright.” I sat down, a little surprised that a man like Zane had learned to cook.
Maybe he was trying to win me over, but all I could think about were the countless times I’d tried to cook for him in the past. And him? He was never even home for dinner.
The thought made a faint, ironic smile touch my lips.
But Zane seemed completely oblivious. He took the seat across from me, his expression full of expectation as he watched me–like a devoted wife waiting for her husband’s approval.
The whole charade was utterly absurd, and yet, he was fully immersed in playing his part.
I’d barely taken my first bite when he asked, “How is it? Is it too salty?”
“No.” I shook my head. “It’s fine.”
I’d never thought Zane was a fool. On the contrary, he was sharp. Anything he set his mind to, he could do well.
That included seeing through Amelia’s schemes, time and again.
He was smart, yes.
But he’d also enabled her.
Enabled her without any bottom line.
Hearing my response, he seemed to relax, a gentle curve touching his lips.
Then eat more. From now on, just tell me what you like, and I’ll make it for you.”
“No need.” I refused quickly, my tone flat and unemotional.
There was no “from now on” for us.
Zane acted as if he didn’t catch my meaning. His smile didn’t falter as he picked up a piece of beef brisket and put it in my bowl. “Then at least eat a bit
more now.”
I didn’t say anything else. My stomach still felt a bit off, so once I was about halfway full, I reached for a grilled lobster claw. I couldn’t be bothered with all those fussy tools, so I just tried to pry it open with my hands.
I hadn’t expected the shell to be so slick with garlic butter sauce. My hand slipped, and a sharp piece of the shell sliced right into my finger.
I sucked in a sharp breath. “Ah-!”
“What’s wrong?” Zane turned toward me. When he saw the bead of blood well up, his brow furrowed. Instinctively, he grabbed my finger and put the cut in his mouth.
His eyes were filled with nothing but concern.
The moment I felt that wet warmth on my skin, my brain short–circuited. I stared at him, stunned.
“What are you doing?”

Chapter 219
Even if he now knew I was that little girl from his past, he didn’t need to go this far.
It was…. kind of creepy.
I tried to pull my hand back sharply. Afraid of hurting me again, he let go–but he didn’t release my hand. Instead, he stood and led me to the sink, turned on the tap, and held my finger under the running water.
After rinsing it, he brought me to the living room, broke open an antiseptic swab, and insisted on disinfecting the tiny cut.
I frowned slightly. “It’ll heal before you’re even done.”
“We still need to treat it properly.” He wouldn’t listen. Kneeling beside me, his long, thick lashes lowered as he focused intently on my finger.
His touch was feather–light. Even for such a small wound, he was still afraid of hurting me.
I didn’t move, but I couldn’t help thinking: maybe he hasn’t had some grand epiphany. Maybe he’s been possessed.
In the past, the most he’d have said was, “Why aren’t you more careful?”
