Chapter 217
Seeing her reluctance, he added gently, “Once you’re rested, you can leave anytime. Your room upstairs… no one else has used it. You can rest assured.”
Even he, at most, only went in to sit for a while when he missed her.
My nerves had been stretched taut all night, and the raw wounds on my wrists and ankles throbbed. I felt dizzy and unsteady on my feet. I also knew that since Zane had said this, he wouldn’t easily let me walk out the door.
My body and mind were exhausted. I nodded. “Okay.”
The clothes I hadn’t taken with me were still there.
The room was kept spotless.
The nurse had said to avoid getting the wounds wet for 24 hours, so a proper shower was out of the question. Even if I could, I was too tired to bother.
Locking the bedroom door, I changed into fresh clothes. The moment my body hit the bed, I fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Third–person POV
Elara never kept her phone volume high, and combined with her deep sleep, she only faintly registered a distant noise. She was too exhausted to even pry her eyes open.
She was completely unaware that someone had somehow entered her securely locked room.
Zane pocketed the door key he’d used. Not wanting the ringing to wake her, he moved quietly to the bedside, intending to silence it. His eyes instinctively dropped to the caller ID.
– Brother Neil.
Zane knew he was one of Gavin’s men.
Figuring that with Gavin’s resources, news of last night’s events had already reached him abroad, Zane stepped out onto the balcony to answer. “It’s Zane,” he said, offering reassurance. “Let your boss know Elara is fine.”
On the other end, Gavin’s expression tightened, a faint, self–mocking smile touching his lips.
Neil was momentarily stunned. He’d been calling for the Young Lady. How could this Zane be so clueless?
And why was he answering her phone?
“Mr. Grayson,” Neil’s tone was clipped. “Where is our Young Lady? Why are you answering her phone?”
“She just fell asleep.” Zane glanced back into the room, his gaze softening on the girl sleeping soundly in the bed. A sense of calm settled over him.
Neil watched the dark, unreadable emotion flicker through his boss’s eyes and folt a spike of irritation. “In the future, please don’t answer our Young Lady’s calls.”
With that, Neil ended the call abruptly.
The swift hang up gave Zane a moment’s pause, but he quickly dismissed it.
Returning to the room, he placed the phone back exactly where he found it. After a moment’s hesitation, he deleted the call log from her recent history.
He sat on the edge of the bed, quietly watching Elara sleep, his heart aching with a tenderness that threatened to overflow. He longed to be closer, but

afraid of waking her, he only dared to reach out and gently wind a strand of her hair around his finger.
He hadn’t slept a wink all night, but watching her now, he felt no fatigue at all.
He just couldn’t get enough.
Thank God I found her.
He would make it up to her.
And he would never, ever let her leave again.
Zane didn’t know how long he sat there before the vibration of his own phone in his pocket finally made him rise carefully and step out to take the call.
“Boss,” his assistant reported, “My team and I have searched everywhere. We still can’t find any trace of the kidnappers from last night.”
It was strange.
It was as if they’d vanished into thin air after leaving the industrial zone.
“And the bomb Scarface mentioned was in the factory?” Zane’s voice was low. “What about it?”
“I checked the site. They definitely installed one,” the assistant relayed faithfully. “But someone disarmed it. With the intensity of that fire yesterday, it would have detonated immediately. You and Mrs. Grayson wouldn’t have made it out.” Merely mentioning it still made the assistant’s heart pound
with residual fear.
Zane’s brow furrowed slowly. “Disarmed?”
