Chapter 34
Asher’s POV
Luca peered intently at the phone screen. “It says here, Ivy Whitfield was spotted with her brother–in–law at a local café. He trailed off and read the article in silence.
I was pacing from one end of the room to the other.
He looked up at me. “It’s a harmless article. Most of it is just basic, normal reporting what they had, what they were wearing, a few pictures here and there. I mean, the only weird thing about this article is that it says you and Marcus have a wonderful relationship, and of course, he’s going to love your wife. That’s a terrible Ge…” He paused. “I mean, I haven’t seen anybody with so much hate for their siblings like the two of you share. You two are the poster image for sibling hate, your hate for each….
“That’s irrelevant, Lucal” I cut in, “That’s not why I showed you the article!”
“Okay..” He trailed off, his brows furrowed in confusion, “What am I supposed to be looking at?” he asked.
Traked my fingers through my hair and sighed in exasperation. “Ivy was spotted with Marcus….
“Yeah… that is correct.” He had a quizzical look on his face. He didn’t get where I was going with this.
I stopped and stared him down. “vy was hanging out with Marcus,” I said through gritted teeth.
He looked up at me. “Oh… His eyes widened in realization. “Ivy and Marcus–that’s definitely not good. He can never mean well…
“Exactly!” Laffirmed. “That’s what she does, you know…
Luca gave me a long look “What did she do?”
The muscles in my jaw flicked angrily, I resumed pacing, then stopped to look at him. “I saw her with her ex in her apartment. They were…” I let the words hang between us. “They were kissing.
Luca’s jaw dropped as he stared at me, as if gauging my reaction. “Okay, that’s bad.”
Iraked my fingers through my hair in exasperation.
“Have you spoken to her?” he asked. “Surely, there could be an
Reason. “He trailed off
“What reason could there possibly be for her to have her ex in her apartment? They were kissing! For all know, I may have walked in on them moments before they had sex” I yelled.
Luca rose to his feet. “Hey, hey, you don’t know that, Asher?
My eyes shimmered with tears, tears I was holding back. “Why do you insist on defending her?” I pressed. I wanted my best friend to be on my side
He shrugged. “I don’t know, man, but the way you spoke about her made me feel there was something there, something more…” He paused. “An attraction at least. I mean, she got married to you there has to be a reason wh-”
“I was a means to get at her ex interjected. “She wanted to make him jealous. The only reason we got married is so she could teach her ex a lesson.”
“You don’t know that, Asher,” he replied in a low voice.
“Maybe I don’t!” I yelled. “Maybe I don’t! But I know she spent most of our honeymoon trip thinking about him, calling him over the phone…” exhaled. “opened up to her, I bared my heart to her, begged her…” I laughed. “I told her wanted to try to make things work, I wanted to be better for her…..
“Asher, you’ve got to hear her side of the story at least…”

I spun around quickly. “Why do you want to hear her side so bad! Why is it so important to y
“That’s because I want it to work, dumbass!” He yelled. “I want to believe you’ve been a totally different person because of her, want to know if possible to love and be loved”
1, then
Texhaled deeply. ” guess we’ll never find out, then?
1 was deep in thought and hallway up the stairs when I saw her at the head of the staircase. Even though we lived in the same house, we barely saw each other. I deliberately got out of bed at odd times in hopes of molding her, and so far I had been successful at it–well, up until now.
I was drawn to her in an instant. She looked beautiful as ever, wearing a pink lacy nightdress that stopped mid thigh. I willed my eyes not to wander Sha was the one thing I wanted that I couldn’t get
She nervously tucked her hair behind her ear and averted her game, I don’t know how long we stood there staring at each other before I broke the silence “Hey Really?Thadn’t spoken to her in ages, and the first words that left my mouth were hey? She was my wife, and all I could say was hey.
“Hi, Asher,”
I sighed. I racked my brain, trying to think of anything to say, the silence between us was uncomfortable. “I didn’t think I would see you up.” Way to go. Asher. I was admitting out loud that I was avoiding her.
“I couldn’t sleep,” she admitted.
I held her gaze. I should ask why. I should go to her, but I didn’t. I stood rooted to the spot, even though all I wanted to do was scoop her into my arms and hold her. Heck, if I was being honest with myself, I wanted more than that; I was distracted by her in that nightdress, her nipples poking through the thin material.
My jaw hardened, and I looked away. Even though I wanted her, I was terrified. I was scared of getting hurt, so I didn’t go to her, nor did I ask her why the couldn’t sleep. Instead, I blurted out the first words that came to mind. “I saw your pictures with Marcus–you two looked cory”
“50,
o, who initiated the date? Marcus?” I shook my head. “Nah, that’s not my brother at all. Small cafes on the streets? Marcus is more fine dining, so you?”
She let out a dry chuckle and shook her head, a look of disbelief on her face. “Are you jealous?” she asked, folding her arms across her chest.
