They stood in a standoff for a moment.
Isabel finally threw the suit at him.
Adrian didn't catch it. The suit fell to the floor in a heap, instantly wrinkling.
The man scoffed, his expression seeming to say, *I knew you didn't want a divorce.*
A knot of frustration formed in Isabel's throat, making it hard to breathe.
It took her a long moment to speak. "It seems to me that Mr. Blackwell is the one who doesn't want a divorce."
Isabel crossed her arms, a look of dawning comprehension on her face. "From the very beginning, you’ve been making all sorts of excuses to avoid finalizing the divorce. It's hard not to suspect that you've fallen in love with me and can't bear to let me go."
Adrian’s expression remained impassive. "Do you really want a divorce?"
"Of course."
"The reason?"
"Irreconcilable differences."
Adrian looked as if he'd heard a joke. "We had a relationship to begin with?"
"Fine, it's because I don't love you anymore, alright?!" Isabel yelled in frustration.
Adrian, however, remained calm. "So, when you loved me, I was forced to marry you. Now that you don't love me, I'm expected to cooperate with your divorce. Isabel, what makes you think I'm so easy to manipulate?"
There it was again.
Because she had once forced him to marry her, everything she did now must have a hidden motive.
It was all an attempt to manipulate him.
At that moment, Isabel was truly at a loss for words.
But she couldn't stand the thought of being stuck in this limbo, unable to get divorced.
She asked, "If I help you change, will you go to City Hall with me?"
Adrian gave a soft "mm-hmm."
Isabel bent down to pick up the suit from the floor.
"Do you think I would wear something that's been dirtied?"
The man's deep, cool voice came from above. Isabel took a sharp breath, suppressed her anger, and stood up. "Then which suit would Mr. Blackwell like to wear?"
"That used to be your job. Why are you asking me?"
