Amanda teased, "Isn't Mr. Reed coming to get you?"
Julian's car was notoriously flashy, so he tried to keep a low profile when possible. "He knows Westbridge even less than I do; I'm afraid he'd get lost. Besides, I still have a few things to finish up."
Amanda left the lab.
Isabel tried one more time to measure out the drug formula, but her right hand was still shaking.
She collapsed into a chair, letting out a heavy sigh.
She had overworked her hand rushing to complete Y-2 before Selena. The panic had set in when she discovered Selena was using Old Mrs. Blackwell as a test subject, terrified something would go wrong. It looked like she would have to rest it for a while.
…
After sitting for a bit longer, Isabel got ready to leave.
She went to the break room and had just picked up her phone to answer Julian's call when a loud bang erupted, and a flash of light exploded before her eyes.
Before she could even process the need to run for the door, a series of explosions followed, and the entire lab began to shake violently.
A sea of flames engulfed her.
A ceiling beam came crashing down. She instinctively shielded her right hand, and her phone flew from her grasp, lost in the chaos.
Gritting her teeth, she decided to try and escape through the window. A jump from the second floor wouldn't be fatal; a broken leg was a small price to pay for her life.
But she never made it. The explosions had filled the air with noxious chemical fumes. She tried her best to avoid inhaling them, but it was impossible. Her vision started to blur.
She thought she heard someone calling her name, but she was too weak to respond.
Then, she felt a sense of weightlessness.
*Am I dead?* she wondered.
She didn't want to die. Not now, when she was just starting to find herself again.
