"He's just a child, different from an adult. He didn't know how he might have hurt you."
Selena relaxed slightly. "Adrian, I know you care about me, but it's precisely because Oliver is a child that I won't hold it against him. That's why I need to be there more, to show him that I care."
Another call came through on Adrian's phone. His patience wearing thin, he sped up his words. "Since you've finished this phase of research, take a good rest and relax. We'll be back in the country soon."
Sensing his impatience, Selena replied considerately, "Don't stay up too late. Get some rest."
"Okay."
Adrian hung up and answered the work call. He also sent a message to Daniel, telling him to keep a closer eye on Selena's movements. He gave a specific instruction: "She cannot get hurt in any way. Ideally, there should be no accidents at all. If something unavoidable happens, take her to Dr. Lawson immediately for a full-body check-up and make sure her wounds are treated properly."
Daniel acknowledged the order but hesitated before adding a warning. "Mr. Blackwell, the incident with the plagiarism and the failed partnership with Richard still has some impact on the Blackwell Group. Your protection of Selena and your contact with Grey Zone has your sister running overseas again. The family is under intense scrutiny. It would be best if you returned soon. As for Mrs. Blackwell..."
"We can't rush things with her."
Adrian simply grunted and ended the call.
He walked back to the dining area, where the burger and fries lay untouched. He saw Oliver sitting on the edge of the bed, fiddling with his smartwatch in frustration.
"Why aren't you eating?"
"I want Mom's cooking," Oliver said unhappily. He still couldn't get through to Isabel's number. "Dad, did Mom change her number?"
Adrian couldn't contact Isabel either. Her old number was likely disconnected. He didn't know the new one, but he had no intention of calling anyway. He knew where she was, and talking in person was better. She probably wouldn't answer his call, and even if she did, she could hang up anytime without really listening. Her temper had certainly gotten worse.
