Alen smiled. “I came to check on you. After all, I think of you as my own brother.”
A corner of Adrian’s mouth twitched slightly. “It’s late. Go get some rest.”
As Alen left, he said, “You should get some rest, too.”
“I will.”
Alen left the study. As he descended the stairs, he passed Selena’s room.
The guards standing watch bowed to him. “Sir.”
Alen nodded but didn’t stop as he continued on his way.

Aurelia City.
Evelyn and Amanda had stayed the night, ostensibly to babysit for Isabel.
The moment they saw Isabel in the morning, they cornered her for all the gossip.
Edmund thoughtfully prepared a platter of fruit, some juice, and a plate of cookies for them.
He sat off to the side, reading a book, paying no attention to their conversation.
“Spill it,” Evelyn urged.
Isabel sighed and recounted the events of the wedding, leaving out almost no detail.
“Whoa! She knelt and begged you for help?” Evelyn’s eyes widened. “She must be truly desperate. But a woman who can do that is a dangerous person. You can’t get involved.”
“Of course I won’t,” Isabel replied. She had no intention of inviting that kind of trouble into her life.
Amanda’s expression was grim. “Even in the Grey Zone, someone with Adrian’s status, and with his siblings’ professions, can’t just do whatever he wants, can he?”
“This is it.” Evelyn grabbed Isabel’s hand. “This is a perfect opportunity. Report him, and use his criminal activity as grounds to file for divorce.”
Isabel had considered it. She knew she couldn’t win against Adrian on her own.
He had already gone mad.
Even the Blackwell family might not be able to control him anymore.
So this was a golden opportunity.
