Of course, Selena knew what Adrian had done for her.
But she feigned hearing it for the first time, covering her mouth as she looked at Adrian, her wide eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
She chided him with feigned reproach, “Adrian, how could you do that? I should be the one to take responsibility for my mistakes. As long as I don't have to leave the lab, I'd even be willing to get on my knees and apologize to Isabel. But you can't divorce Isabel for my sake! Wouldn't that make me the villain? No, I absolutely refuse to let you divorce!”
“Why don’t you just shut up,” Isabel said, her lips twisting into a cold sneer. “Whether we get a divorce or not is none of your business.”
“Isabel...”
“Are you done?” Adrian’s voice was frigid. “Get out.”
Isabel was long accustomed to Adrian’s coldness toward her whenever he was defending Selena.
She immediately opened the car door and got out.
Daniel was driving, so terrified he barely dared to breathe.
This was a soap opera straight from hell.
...
Isabel didn’t have an invitation. Just as she was about to call old Mrs. Blackwell again, her phone rang—it was her.
“Isabel, have you arrived?”
Isabel said, “Grandma, could you have Robert come get me?”
Without asking why, old Mrs. Blackwell immediately sent Robert to bring Isabel to her private lounge.
Seeing Isabel's simple attire, she put on a deliberately passive-aggressive tone. “So, you’re getting a divorce, and now I mean nothing to you? You come to my eightieth birthday and won’t even wear a proper gown.”
Isabel knew she was just teasing. She walked over, took old Mrs. Blackwell’s arm, and coaxed, “You’re the star of the show today, Grandma. I can’t steal your spotlight.”
Old Mrs. Blackwell didn’t buy it for a second. She had someone bring over the gown she had prepared. “Change into this.”
“Maybe not...”
As Isabel started to refuse, old Mrs. Blackwell added, “Even if you’re no longer my granddaughter-in-law, you’re still my granddaughter. I have your mother’s heart inside me. The kindness I show you isn't just because of me.”
Isabel wasn't sure if hearts held memories, or if her mother's love could be carried within someone else.
