Valerie hadn't expected him to suddenly turn so serious. "If it's not true, that's fine. There's no need to get so worked up."
Lucius said, "Valerie, have you ever thought about our future?"
"Do you mean our divorce?"
Lucius shook his head. "No, our future."
Valerie shrugged. "Never."
Lucius pressed, "Think about it now."
Valerie pretended to give it some serious thought.
After a moment, she said something completely unexpected, "After giving it some thought, I think we should have a child."
Lucius immediately scooped her up in his arms. "Let's go. We'll make one right now."
Valerie instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck as she was lifted into the air. "Wait, my late-night snack isn't even in my mouth yet!"
Lucius replied smoothly, "I'll eat with you after we have a baby."
When Hannah came out of the kitchen carrying the meal, she saw Lucius walking up the stairs to the third floor with Valerie in his arms.
The sight stabbed at her eyes, and her jealousy intensified to a maddening degree.
Why her? Why was it Valerie, and not her?
They were both women from the countryside. She couldn't accept that the aloof Lucius had fallen for someone like that.
Did he really think the housekeepers were all fools?
Did he think he could silence the gossip with some nonsense about a "distant relative"?
Hannah had long suspected that Valerie wasn't related to the White family at all.
She was probably just a secret lover who couldn't be shown to the public.
She could tolerate a woman like Sonia, someone with a proper background, as Lucius' girlfriend.
