Giselle spent the entire day at home, unable to bring herself to do anything else. That night, she couldn't sleep at all. Her mind was filled with thoughts of Zachary, terrified that she'd wake up to devastating news.
By the third morning, she couldn't take it anymore. She rushed back to the hospital.
From a distance, she spotted members of the Kane family still gathered outside the emergency room. Anne was there too. Giselle didn't dare show herself openly, so she stayed hidden, watching from the shadows.
A little after 10:00 am, the doors to the ICU finally opened. Tony stepped out, his expression noticeably more relaxed. Though she couldn't hear what he said, the tension that had been etched into the Kane family's faces for days suddenly gave way to smiles.
It had to be good news.
Whatever it was, their reaction allowed Giselle's tightly wound nerves to loosen.
Still, she had no right to follow them into the ICU for a visit. The heavy weight in her chest remained. She was still anxious, still worried.
She waited another hour. When she saw Tony leaving the ICU and heading toward his office, she quietly trailed behind him.
She knew the way. She'd been to his office a few times before. Without hesitation, she barged in like she owned the place.
Tony, still wearing his white coat, stood by the window drinking water, looking completely at ease—like a general unwinding after a hard-won battle.
But Giselle had never shown him any gratitude. She defied him at every turn, constantly insulted him, and fought tooth and nail with Renee. The chaos she brought into the household made it nearly impossible for him to feel any affection toward her.
Giselle knew all this. She also knew that while Tony was brilliant in his professional field, he was a disaster in relationships. A workaholic with zero emotional intelligence, he ignored the turmoil at home and took a hands-off approach to parenting. Lately, though, she'd started to let go of her resentment.
Especially after he'd performed the surgery himself and dragged Zachary back from the brink of death, whatever hatred she once held toward Tony had begun to fade.
"No matter how messed up I am, I got that trait from you," she said, still unwilling to yield. "Just stop letting Renee whisper in your ear. Stay out of my business and focus on your own."
