Everyone froze in shock the moment they heard his words.
"What do you mean by that? You're almost 40, and you still treat marriage like a game?" Dorothea was the first to speak, her voice sharp with disapproval. "Is getting married really that difficult for you? What exactly do you want?"
Donovan didn't want to argue with her. In fact, he didn't want to speak at all.
Grace jumped in. "Don, don't tell us the reason you're backing out of this marriage is because you still want to keep messing around with Giselle—"
"Don't mention her again!" Just hearing Giselle's name was enough to reignite his fury. He snapped, growing more agitated. "Right now, the priority is Zach's recovery. My personal life is none of your concern. Cancel the engagement. I want nothing to do with the women from the Holt family."
With that, he turned and stormed upstairs, heading straight into his bedroom. The door slammed shut behind him, locked from the inside. He didn't want to be disturbed.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean now?" Dorothea fumed. "He promised to get engaged, and now he's backing out again? Does he really still want to stay tangled up with that vixen?"
"Of course he does," Grace added bitterly, shooting a glare upstairs. "Ever since he started messing around with that little tramp, he's been angry all the time and snaps at everyone. You can't even have a proper conversation with him anymore. Now he wants to call off the engagement? That has her written all over it!"
Ethan, the eldest brother, often discussed company affairs with Donovan and had more contact with him than the others. He stepped in with a more measured tone.
"You're all pushing him too hard. Think about it. He had an affair with Giselle, and now you expect him to marry Anne with a clear conscience? Both of them are Tony's daughters. If they go through with this marriage, it'll be a joke to everyone watching. It's better to call it off now."
But Grace was quick to object. "So what? If we keep quiet, who's going to know? The real point is that Dr. Holt helped save Zach, and Renee's pharmacy chain has already expanded overseas. That's a major distribution channel for Kane Pharmaceutical Group. An alliance with their family is still our best option."
"Well, Giselle is Tony's daughter too, isn't she?" Ethan blurted out without thinking. "If Don wants to marry her, that's his choice."
She made a promise to herself that she would no longer rely on Donovan to enact her revenge. From now on, she would cut all ties with the Kane family.
As for her grudge against Renee, there was no rush. She had time. That kind of revenge didn't need to happen this year or the next. What mattered most now was walking out from the shadow Donovan had cast over her life.
One afternoon, just after closing up shop and preparing to head out for lunch, she received a message on her phone.
When she opened it, she was stunned.
It was from Zachary.
"Giselle, are you doing okay?"
