In a flash, Donovan snatched one of the crutches from Zachary's hand and tossed it aside. Then he yanked Zachary up and pulled him close, eyes bloodshot as he glared at him.
"Zachary, don't you dare push your luck!" he snarled. "I've endured no less pain than you! Don't you fucking think the whole world owes you! Because of your childish behavior, I've paid a price hundreds of times greater than you ever have!"
Caught off guard by Donovan's sudden outburst, Zachary was momentarily stunned into silence. He met Donovan's rage with his own furious stare.
"What are you doing? Let him go!"
Terrified by Donovan's outburst, Grace hurried over and pushed him away. Her heart ached as she helped Zachary sit on the bed before turning around to lash out at Donovan.
Dorothea was equally shocked. She entered the ward and tugged at him.
"What are you losing your mind over this time? Can't you see Zach is finally getting better?"
"Exactly!" Grace chimed in. "Dorothea, haven't you noticed Don's been completely unhinged lately? Snapping at the executives in the company by day, giving us the cold shoulder by night… and just the other day, he was detained for some crime.
"And now, he's yelling at Zach like a madman. It's like he's possessed!"
Having vented his frustration, Donovan stormed out of the ward. He lit a cigarette in the living room, taking several hard drags to ease the suffocating bitterness in his chest.
Dorothea's expression hardened. Sighing, she hobbled over to the bed and tried to comfort Zachary.
"Zach, it's been so long. Stop holding a grudge against your uncle. For your sake, he's cut ties with that woman, standing firmly by your side and protecting your bond. Can't you take a step back and make peace?
"Stop acting like a petulant child. Grudges within a family can always be resolved, don't you think?"
Zachary snorted. "If he'd cut ties with her, he wouldn't have been accused of rape. Do you think I'm stupid? He's just putting on a show—he's still doing the same filthy things behind my back."
Remembering he had plenty of pending work in the office, he had no choice but to leave first. He reached the elevator, only to be met by Anne the moment its doors opened.
"Don?" she squeaked. "Are you here to visit Zach too?"
Having just found out he was released from the police station yesterday, she texted and called him—all to no avail. Now that she'd finally seen him, she was thrilled.
Donovan had wanted to ignore her. But the conversation between Zachary and Dorothea came to his mind, and now he was aware that she had been playing tricks behind his back.
He stopped in his tracks and looked at her. "Go over there. I need to talk to you about something."
Withdrawing his gaze, he started toward a corner nearby.
