Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 196

For the next couple of days, Giselle felt depressed. She didn't head to the hospital to visit Donovan at all. She just called Tony every now and then to check on Donovan's condition.

Once she learned that he was safe, she gradually began to let go. Afterward, she tried to redirect her focus back to her own life with a full heart.

However, whenever she had a moment to herself, a strange and suffocating sense of loneliness always seemed to creep back into her life.

One afternoon, she'd just finished getting ready and was about to head to her shop when someone knocked on her door.

Based on the way the person was knocking on the door, Giselle already had an inkling of who it was. The low and deliberate knock made her heart skip a beat.

After taking a deep breath, she opened the door.

The person that was now standing before her was none other than Donovan Kane.

Giselle stared at his familiar face and felt herself grow anxious. Her body stiffened, and she began to avoid his gaze.

"Aren't you supposed to be in the hospital?" she asked before he could say anything.

It had only been a week since he'd woken up and had been transferred to a regular hospital ward.

It was clear that he'd yet to fully recover from his illness. His face was weary and covered in stubble. He seemed to be in low spirits, but he was still as difficult to read as ever.

He didn't reply, but he didn't lash out at her like he used to do either. On top of that, he wasn't questioning her or demanding answers from her.

Instead, he acted as if he was returning to his own home and walked into her living room without saying a word.

Giselle didn't know what he was doing here, but she didn't stop him from entering the house. She also realized that he seemed to be holding some kind of folder.

Once he entered the living room, he placed the folder on the coffee table. Then, he placed his hands in his pockets and headed out to the balcony.

He stared out into the distance for a long period of time. Giselle didn't know if he was thinking about something or if he was simply getting some air.

"It's your compensation," he replied.

Donovan turned away from her and stared into the distance.

Then, in a heavy voice, he told her everything that'd been weighing on his heart for the longest time.

"I'm the reason our relationship ended up like this. Take this money as a form of compensation for all the physical and emotional harm that I've put you through. Thank you… for being a part of the arrangement that we had," he said.

Giselle felt her chest tighten.

He continued, "I hope you'll accept the money and stop resenting me. From now onward, there'll be nothing between us. If you choose to date someone new after this, I'll respect your wishes as well."

He tilted his head upward and closed his eyes. Then, he added solemnly, "Let's put an end to our relationship in a dignified manner and not contact each other ever again."

Giselle didn't think that Donovan's so-called "compensation" would mark the end of their relationship.
