Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 239

Anne lay pale and motionless on the hospital bed, tears silently sliding down her cheeks. After all, she had been carrying Donovan's child—the Kane family's heir—and now, all of a sudden, the baby was gone.

Naturally, Dorothea was livid. "Everything was fine these past few months. What on earth happened?" she demanded after comforting Anne. "You're her mother. How could you let something this serious happen to her?"

Renee glanced at Ethan, who was nearby, feigning hesitation. "Mrs. Kane Senior, I don't even know where to start… I'm just worried that if I tell you the truth, it might cause tension in your family."

"Why would it? What exactly happened?" Grace asked.

Renee explained, "It was a man named Gideon. He kidnapped Anne and assaulted her, and that's what caused her to miscarry. He… is Mr. Kane's adopted son."

"What did you just say?" Grace was stunned. She immediately questioned Ethan, "What adopted son? How did he come into conflict with Anne? Why didn't I hear anything about this before?"

Ethan took a deep breath before explaining, "He's just a boy I sponsored more than a decade ago. He's an orphan. I thought he had potential, so I looked out for him over the years.

"How was I supposed to know he'd do something like this? Honestly, I don't want to get involved!"

Renee snapped, "Don't you dare wash your hands of this, Mr. Kane! Anne was carrying your family's bloodline, your family's heir! And now your adopted son has killed that child in the cruelest way possible.

"You can't just pretend it never happened! If you refuse to act, I'll have no choice but to go to the cops. This was intentional homicide!"

Ethan was already drained from dealing with Giselle's kidnapping case. Renee's accusations only made his irritation boil over. "Don't make baseless claims without proof," he said dismissively.

He stepped into her bedroom and sank onto her bed. Burying his face into her pillow, he breathed in the faint scent she'd left behind. He closed his eyes, and the ache in his chest tore through him.

Just then, his phone rang. Still out of it, he glanced at the screen. It was Tony's number.

"Hello?" He didn't bother with pleasantries. "What is it?" he growled.

Tony's tone was solemn as he said, "Don… I just got word from the cops. They found a woman's body downstream from Orrensund Bridge. Based on the description, she bears a strong resemblance to Giselle. They want me to confirm her identity. Do you… want to come with me?"

After hearing that, Donovan's heart seized violently. He shot upright from the bed. "Where do we meet? Send me the location right away!"
