The doctor adjusted his glasses, his expression grave.
"Mr. Kane's injuries from the crash are quite severe," he solemnly stated. "His liver was ruptured, his lungs suffered contusions, and he has lost approximately 1000ml of blood. After an emergency transfusion and surgery, his vitals have stabilised. However, he's not out of the woods yet…"
The news weighed heavily on everyone. Dorothea, who was usually unshakable, felt her legs go weak yet again.
Tears streamed down her face as she wiped them incessantly. "How could this happen… How?" she murmured, "Don, you have to pull through. You must… You can't leave us…"
Huddled in the corner, Giselle felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. Her legs threatened to give way too.
Tormented by the fear that Donovan might not survive, she couldn't let her guard down for a single second.
Worried about the subpar conditions of Sidney General Hospital, Ethan leveraged his connections to transfer the still-unconscious Donovan to Torgal Hospital. It was a premium private hospital where Tony was stationed.
There, an elite medical team of domestic and international specialists were assembled to take over his treatment.
With the best resources in place, Donovan's condition stabilized quickly. But waking up would still take days, and there was no guarantee.
It was only then that Giselle was forced to acknowledge the indispensable role Donovan's family played in his life.
In the face of such a devastating crash, they were the only ones with the resources and the resolve to provide the help he needed—the kind that truly made the difference between life and death.
And she, labeled as the cause of the accident, could do nothing but watch helplessly in the corner.
Giselle thought that it made sense. Back when Zachary was in trouble, Donovan had severed ties with her—his casual fling—without a second thought.
He'd even forced her to terminate the pregnancy, all to protect his bond with his nephew.
Having suffered through a similar tragedy once, Zachary seemed conflicted himself. The sight of the woman who had once made his heart race made his chest feel tight.
"You don't have to blame yourself. I believe that you're innocent in all this," he softly said.
He slumped down beside her, just as exhausted. "I heard you managed to escape back from abroad on your own a while back. Honestly, I admired you for it. I thought about reaching out, but… I was worried that Uncle Don would misunderstand, so I never did."
Giselle's eyes lowered. "Zach, it means a lot that you don't hold the past against me. If we can, let's just go back to being friends. As long as you don't hate me, that is."
"Don't make it sound so dire," Zachary said. "I guess it was just fate. Back then, I lost my head because I didn't understand the bond you and Uncle Don had. When I finally learned the truth, I realized I was just a clown. A dumb one, at that."
"I'm just lucky for making it out alive," he continued, giving a bitter laugh. "Once Uncle Don recovers, you should marry him as soon as possible. Maybe once you're officially my aunt, I'll finally be able to put this behind me…"
Hearing that, Giselle's mood grew heavier. "The future can wait," she said. "What matters now is that Donovan wakes up."
