Giselle dangled on the rope, inching until she reached the storm drain's curve. The air was heavy with a rotting stench, and stagnant water gleamed below. The shaft was so narrow that she couldn't move freely, and the crushing space left her gasping for air.
After much effort, she was able to grab the cat. She put it carefully against her chest, shielding it as best she could.
When she looked up, she saw that several firefighters had arrived. They bent over the manhole and were asking about her situation with concern.
After indicating she was fine, the men above started pulling her up by the rope. With her light frame, it didn't take long for the men to hoist her. Someone held her arms and helped her sit down at the edge.
Before she could even catch her breath, she immediately handed the cat to Dorothea, panting and smiling weakly as she said, "Mrs. Kane, your cat is alive. It's okay. You just have to take it to the veterinary clinic."
Seeing that Nini was alive, Dorothea let out a joyous yell and almost cried with relief. Then, she quickly instructed Alice to take it to the veterinary clinic. Afterward, her attention returned to Giselle.
The once beautiful and elegant young woman was now soaked from head to toe. Her clothes and pants were soaked with sewer water, her hair tangled and wet against her cheeks, and her pale face and arms were smeared with dirt.
Once home, she went straight to the bathroom. She stripped off her filthy clothes and stepped beneath the shower, letting the hot water cascade over her, rinsing away the stench and grime of the sewer.
Having years of outdoor experience, she had previously explored countless mysterious caves with her teammates. Compared to that, diving into the drain to save a cat was hardly worth mentioning.
Giselle never took Dorothea's prejudices seriously, nor had she ever plotted against her. Regardless of the old woman's sternness, she was still Donovan's mother. Everything she did was for her son and the Kane family, not out of spite.
