"Fine. Then I won't come back to this house either," Donovan said with a blank expression.
As soon as he finished, he grabbed Giselle's hand and turned to leave.
Ethan quickly stood up to stop him. "Don, you're already in your late 30s. Don't be so childish. Since you're here, at least stay for dinner. Don't take Grace's words to heart," he urged.
He then turned and scolded Grace. "Don rarely comes back. Stop talking so much. The more you say, the more annoying it gets, and it won't change anything. What's done is done. Just stay out of it."
"Stay out of it?" Grace snapped. "I'm protecting the Kane family's reputation! Mom is old now. She doesn't have the energy to manage everything, so she keeps it all inside, and it's making her sick. You're never home, and if I don't take responsibility, the legacy our family has built for decades will be ruined!"
"That's enough. Stop this nonsense," Dorothea finally said.
Dorothea fixed Donovan with a hard stare. "I don't have the strength to argue with you every day, and I don't have many years left to waste on this. If you're determined to force this woman into the family, then fine, I'll take a step back," she said.
She rose to her feet and fixed her eyes on Giselle. "You may hold the title of Donovan's wife, but you are far from the daughter-in-law I expect for this family. I cannot accept you as things stand. Still, I'm willing to give you a chance to prove yourself."
"Enough!" Donovan cut her off before she could continue. "She has nothing to prove. I've said it before—who I marry is my choice. I'm only informing you about my marriage, not asking for your approval. She is my wife, and my responsibility alone. She owes nothing to any of you."
