Dorothea stood at the doorway, watching Donovan and Giselle teasing each other. Her expression was complicated, and her thoughts were conflicted.
She had never imagined that her usually aloof and serious son could be so completely enchanted by a woman. Seeing her proud son, the CEO, acting like a lovesick fool was almost unbearable for her as a mother.
She wanted to scold Giselle but could not bring herself to do so. Instead, she sharply said, "Enough. Stop causing trouble in the kitchen and come out here!"
She couldn't bear watching her precious son crouched in the kitchen, plucking a chicken. It was humiliating, and he was covered in the smell of raw poultry.
However, Giselle simply pushed Donovan out of the way and stayed behind. After finishing with the chicken's innards, she helped the housekeepers and chefs with cleaning and even cooked two dishes under their guidance.
After a couple of hours of work, she helped carry the dishes to the table. Throughout, she looked composed and unbothered, handling the chores with grace and without any hint of resentment or humiliation.
Dorothea studied her closely. She was energetic, smart, and quick to adapt. There was really nothing to criticize. In fact, Dorothea felt herself starting to like her a little. Even Grace, who usually found fault with everything, could only roll her eyes.
When it was time to eat, Ethan tried to lighten the mood. After taking a sip, he said earnestly to Donovan, "Don, your marriage is basically settled. We want to respect your choice and won't interfere.
"You're not getting any younger, and starting a family should be your focus. Just make sure you approach your marriage with the same clear judgment you bring to work."
Then he turned to Giselle with a slight warning, "As for you, Ms. Holt, I won't bring up the past. I only ask one thing—stay away from Gideon."
