Giselle snatched Anne's phone out of her hand and hurled it into the decorative pool nearby.
Anne's eyes went wide as the device sank beneath the water. Rage flared across her face.
"You bitch! What the hell do you mean by this? You got what you wanted—you married into the Kane family. Our feud should've ended long ago! So why do you keep provoking me?"
Ever since Anne had killed Eastin, Giselle had lost all patience for words. She no longer cared to argue. If actions could settle things, she'd rather use her hands than her mouth.
"You've set your sights on Zachary now, haven't you?"
"That's none of your damn business!" Anne snapped. Her wrists were pinned, but her tongue was sharp. "You clawed your way into the Kane family with every shameless trick you could think of. Who are you to question me?"
Giselle looked at her with open disdain. "Anne, let me warn you. Whatever grudge lies between us has nothing to do with Zachary. If you dare drag him into your schemes, I'll make sure you vanish from this world completely."
Anne let out a cold laugh. "Bitch, what right do you have to lecture me? Wasn't it you who used him and left him half-dead in a car wreck?
"You're filthier than anyone else! Don't stand there pretending to be righteous. You and Donovan are nothing but a pair of shameless cheats.
"Now that you've trampled over others and flown high together, you think you can police me and Zachary? We're just two castoffs keeping each other warm. What, are you jealous?"
Giselle stared at her silently. No amount of arguing would change what Anne was. Giselle knew better than anyone why Anne had gone after Zachary—and what ulterior motives lay behind that sudden intimacy.
In truth, it wasn't Giselle's place to interfere. But she couldn't shake the image of the bright, carefree person Zachary once was—the one who had pursued her so earnestly before fate left him broken on the road. She carried that guilt still.
Giselle reached across and laced her fingers with his. "Don't worry. I won't let Anne succeed. Zach's been sheltered by your family for more than 20 years. I won't let that bitch destroy him."
To the Kane family, Zachary wasn't just the eldest son. He was their lifeblood. If Anne ever sank her claws into him, the damage could tear the entire household apart.
…
Over the next two days, Donovan was away on a business trip to Swesten.
Alone again, Giselle couldn't stop replaying Anne's venomous threats in her mind. Try as she might, she couldn't shrug it off as someone else's problem.
At last, she devised a plan.
