Renee knew better than to linger and quietly left the ward, careful not to provoke Donovan in any way.
Once downstairs, she made her way toward the emergency room, just as Tony was stepping out. She approached him with a seemingly casual question. "How is Giselle?"
Tony's expression was grim. "Focus on yourself and stay out of here," he said, then walked straight toward his office.
A faint, cold smile tugged at the corners of Renee's lips.
Renee had been consumed by grief ever since losing her son. Seeing her despised stepdaughter in such a powerless state gave her a grim sense of relief. She knew Giselle had no chance of survival. Her life was already slipping away, and even a doctor as skilled as Tony could do nothing to save her.
Renee even found herself wondering if Sebastian, watching over her from beyond, had somehow orchestrated this. Maybe it was his way of ensuring that she could finally live the rest of her life in peace, without threats like Giselle.
Whatever the reason, once Giselle was gone, a major obstacle would be removed from Renee's world, and her life could finally settle into calm.
Just as she turned to leave, Zachary approached from the opposite direction.
Renee paused for a moment, and a thought crossed her mind. She quickly composed herself and approached him, forcing a small smile. "Zachary, you're here too? Are you visiting Giselle?"
Zachary gave her only a faint glance. "Yes. Can I help you with something, Ms. Moore?"
Renee felt a pang of disappointment at his indifference. "Anne was recently taken into criminal custody. You didn't hear about it at Usna, did you?"
"That's impossible," Renee said carefully. "Your uncle's recent assault case in Astrakhan was ultimately connected to Anne."
She paused before continuing, "You are surely aware of the situation. Since you and Anne share that kind of relationship, you should at least speak with your uncle personally. Perhaps the matter can be resolved privately. You are close to him, and a few words from you might persuade him."
"Don't be absurd, Ms. Moore," Zachary said flatly. "You can clean up her mess when she offends ordinary people, but do you understand who she's crossed this time? She tried to ruin my uncle's reputation. I'm lucky I haven't taught her a lesson myself, and now you expect me to plead for her? Have you lost your mind?"
Renee stared at him in shock, unable to process what she had just heard.
Zachary didn't bother replying. With his hands tucked into his pockets, he turned away and walked toward the ICU.
