Dorothea worried about his condition and had been checking in on him at the manor every few days, while also keeping Adrian on constant watch over his movements.
Over the past couple of days, Donovan had shown slight signs of returning to his usual self, so Dorothea instructed Adrian to prepare a table full of his favorite dishes. That evening, she arrived at the manor for dinner along with Ethan and Grace.
Donovan seemed to be trying to pull himself together. In a rare moment of goodwill, he finally made his way downstairs and reluctantly joined the family dinner.
During dinner, he even ate a few bites, though he remained sullen and silent the entire time, as if completely oblivious to the presence of his family.
After half a month of sinking into a dark, sunless depression, he had lost at least ten pounds. His cheeks had hollowed noticeably, his eye sockets sunken, and his eyes had dimmed with no light. His face had begun to sag slightly, and his overall appearance was utterly haggard.
Dorothea's heart ached as she watched him. She didn't dare start a conversation, and Giselle's name was off-limits. Everyone in the room tread carefully around him, fearing he might lash out and overturn the table in a fit of rage.
Sensing the heavy atmosphere, Dorothea deliberately changed the subject. She asked Ethan, "Have you arranged for someone to oversee Zach at the company lately? Since we decided to have him stay at the domestic headquarters, you should keep a closer eye on him."
"I've assigned him to start as a medical representative and get some experience in the field," Ethan replied.
"That's fine," Dorothea said. "Zach hasn't faced much hardship. If he's going to shoulder big responsibilities in the future, he needs to learn from the ground up."
After finishing the topic of Zachary, Dorothea's thoughts turned to her other grandson. She asked softly, "What about Gideon? What's he up to these days?"
Ethan paused for a moment. "He went abroad not long ago. He said staying in this city would affect the harmony of the Kane family, so he plans to develop his career overseas and settle there long-term."
Dorothea's expression darkened. "Which woman?"
Grace hesitated, then reluctantly named her, "It's Renee's daughter, Anne."
Ethan looked up in shock. "What did you say?"
Glancing nervously at Donovan, Grace continued, revealing the full story. "Renee told me yesterday that Anne was found to be pregnant. She was released on bail, and the child she's carrying is Zach's."
Hearing this, Donovan, who had been keeping to himself, froze instantly.
