Sitting across the table, Ethan couldn't stand it any longer. He sprang up his chair and said, "Ms. Moore, we understand how you feel, but please be rational! Don has already magnanimously dropped the case, as he doesn't want to be entangled with Anne anymore. He just wants to return to a normal life, so how could he possibly still have any ties to her? Please don't grasp at straws in desperation!"
But Renee's gut told her that Donovan was the prime suspect.
"Stop playing the fool, Donovan!" Renee yelled hysterically. "Just a month ago, you schemed to terminate Anne's pregnancy! Then, you suddenly magnanimously dropped the case. I found it strange at the time. What could have caused such a sudden change in attitude?
"But now I understand," she continued. "You deliberately withdrew the case so Anne could leave the country freely! That would make it easier for you to target her abroad!"
Hearing these accusations, Donovan remained utterly unmoved. He didn't even bat an eye.
He rose to his feet with an air of utter indifference. "It's too noisy here. I'm going home," he said.
"You're not leaving!" Renee roared, grabbing his arm as he moved toward the door. "Donovan, you must tell me where Anne is. If you've laid a finger on her, I will drag you down with me if it's the last thing I do!"
Donovan let her pull at him without offering any explanation.
"There's no need to jump to conclusions before we have all the facts," Dorothea said, rising to her feet. "Don had been busy with work all month and hadn't gone anywhere. He withdrew the case from consideration after Anne lost the baby. He didn't want to escalate the situation any further, so how could it possibly be some elaborate scheme like you're imagining?"
Even Grace didn't buy it and chimed in to persuade Renee, too. "Are you sure Anne is truly missing?" she asked. "Maybe she's in hiding somewhere? Perhaps she doesn't want to contact anyone, too?"
Seeing him go so coldly, Renee spun around to plead with the rest of the Kanes. "Mrs. Kane Senior, I'm desperate. I admit that Anne has done many foolish things in the past. She hurt Don the most, especially with all those illegal schemes behind his back.
"So, you must know better than anyone. Don is the only one who could have a motive here!" she continued. "Please, I'm begging you. Make him tell me where Anne is… I've already lost my son, and Giselle is dead, too. If anything happens to Anne, I don't know how I can go on living! So please, you have to help me… Have pity on me, I'm begging you!"
The once strong and shrewd Renee was now broken and drained, as if stripped of her spirit. The sight weighed heavily on Dorothea's heart.
Even Ethan, who had been brushing it off, was visibly stirred. "Calm down," he urged. "I'll confront Don shortly and get to the bottom of this."
