Gideon was sorely disappointed to find that no one knew where Giselle had gone. The housekeeper who usually took care of Giselle's daily needs had been sent home three days ago to rest. As for the doctors and nurses who had once treated her, they'd long since moved on to other assignments after her recovery.
They didn't keep in touch with her anymore, much less keep track of her routine. The few acquaintances she occasionally spoke with hadn't heard from her in days either. None of them had any idea where she'd gone.
It didn't take a genius to realize that she had run away on her own. But why would she do that?
Thinking about her condition, Gideon felt his chest tighten with panic. He hurried back into her room and pulled open the drawer where she kept her medicine. The month's supply of anticonvulsants he had prepared for her was gone.
Only a single note remained.
His hands trembled as he picked it up. The neat, delicate handwriting was unmistakably hers.
"Gideon, I'm sorry. By the time you read this, I'd be long gone. Please don't worry about me. I've gone somewhere where I can finally find peace. Thank you for taking care of me this past year. I know I can never give you what you want, and I have no right to keep wasting your time.
"You don't need to worry. You were there for me through the darkest days, and now I can take care of myself. I want to face the rest of the road alone. Please don't look for me. Just live your life well. I wish you all the best. Goodbye."
Gideon's hands shook violently as he stared at the familiar words. His entire body trembled as reality sank in.
