Donovan and Giselle walked along the beach in silence for a while. Donovan naturally reached out to put his arm around her shoulders, intending to pull her close, but she pushed his hand away.

Donovan paused, considering her physical condition, and didn't press. He slipped his hands into his pockets and let it be.

After a moment, Giselle spoke. "I have a small request, and I hope you'll agree."

"Okay, tell me," he said, thinking to himself that even if her request was for him to die, he wouldn't mind.

"It's about Gideon," she began, taking a deep breath. "I know you're likely to blame him for everything that happened this past year, to hold resentment toward him, but it's really not his fault.

"I was the one who asked him to keep the truth from you. Please don't go back and make things difficult for him, or go crazy and fight him again. I just don't want you interfering with his life anymore."

Hearing her defend Gideon stirred something in him. In the past, he would have darkened and exploded with fury, but this time he kept all his anger and resentment buried deep. His face revealed nothing, calm to an almost unnatural degree.

"Alright," he said lightly. "Don't worry, I have no intention of bothering him. If anything, I owe him my thanks."
