Marselle put on a look of sudden realization and raised her voice. "Oh, that's right! I heard your wife has epilepsy, isn't it?" Indeed, people with that condition really shouldn't drink. My bad! I'm sorry, Mrs. Kane. Let's drink tea instead."
Giselle froze, her face draining of colour.
The others at the table shot her a few odd looks.
One of the partners, Thomas Henderson, said to Donovan regretfully, "It turns out that Mrs. Kane has such a condition. It's a tough one. A friend's son developed epilepsy after a car accident, and it flares up often. Quite troublesome."
"With that condition, Mrs. Kane definitely shouldn't drink."
"Right, and she needs to avoid overexertion…"
A few others voiced polite concern, but underneath it was all judgment. They looked down on the powerful Donovan for choosing a wife like this. Even their glances toward Giselle held a trace of disdain.
However, Donovan showed no embarrassment at all. He didn't care in the slightest that his wife's condition had been exposed or how others might perceive him because of it.
Instead, he wrapped an arm around Giselle's shoulders, holding her close, and admitted openly, "Yes, my wife suffered a head injury and was left with lasting complications. That's why I bring her with me wherever I go. I feel at ease only when I'm the one looking after her. I hope everyone can understand."
Upon hearing his gentle, protective tone, the others quickly followed up with compliments, easing the tension around the table.
