Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 196

Lia

It was time I told my mates. Simone knew but my mates didn’t. Then I would proceed to tell my brother and Gabi. I’d also tell her twins, my niece and nephew, in the best way I could. They were very young so I don’t know how well they would even understand for the most part.

But my mates were the most important people to tell. And yet I was nervous.

This was a huge change. I also, briefly, wonder if they are going to be upset over trying to figure out who the fuck the

biological parents are, but everything is going to be all right.

The fact is we are all a pack and family so there is no reason for me to be upset about it. I am still putting it off until this very morning that is.

Everyone was gathered in the kitchen table. I was pacing, walking back and forth. Honestly, I felt like I was going to wear a hole out in the kitchen floor from all the pacing I was doing but I was pretty sure I wouldn’t. It was sturdy ground.

I wrung my hands together, the words caught in my throat. They were all looking at me-Colby, Jesse, Matt, and Rain-each of them with varying degrees of impatience and curiosity.

“I, um,” I started, voice cracking. “I have something to tell you.”

Everyone got strange looks on their faces. They looked confused, except Rain, who was confused. To be fair, he already looks confused most days. It’s a part of his charm.

I almost want to laugh about it, but I have news to get to, so there is no getting distracted. Colby leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “You’re not leaving us, are you?”

“No!” I shook my head so fast it made me dizzy. “No, it’s-it’s good news. I think.” “Think?” Jesse raised an eyebrow. “You either know or you don’t, Lia.”

I took a deep breath. “I’m pregnant.” The room went dead silent.

Now this wasn’t what I wanted… or maybe it was good.

Why was everyone so quiet? Even Rain was quiet, which was making me very nervous. My stomach was twisting into knots, making me wonder what was going on.

Speak damn it!

But they didn’t.

Not a sound. Not even breathing. Just stunned, wide-eyed silence.

Matt was the first to react, letting out a slow, stunned laugh. “Wait. Like… really?”

“Yes, really,” I said, my voice trembling with something between terror and excitement.

Rain just stared at me, my mouth hanging open. And then, to my absolute horror, his eyes filled with tears. Big, fat, shimmering tears.

“Oh my god,” he whispered, voice breaking. “We’re going to have a baby?” “Babies,” I corrected weakly. “Plural. It’s twins.”

Rain made a choked sound-half laugh, half sob-and flung himself at me, wrapping me in the tightest hug I’d ever experienced.

I was a little taken by surprise because it came so suddenly. It’s like he snapped out of whatever daze he was in. But it was good that they were finally reacting to what I was saying because I was beginning to think that nothing was going to break through their daze. Everything was oaky now. I knew that now.
