Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 199

Jesse

Learning Lia was pregnant was amazing but also fucking scary. I never imagined myself as someone who would be a father. After the two of us were together, I knew it was bound to happen, but the fact of the matter is, I never thought I would be a parent.

Sighing, I finished gathering the groceries and headed home. It was truly annoying to go about the day-to-day things you needed to live. I had gone for a run last time, realizing that we all had been missing out on this.

It was a good run, but when I got home, I realized I had to get back to normal life. AKA getting groceries.

Huffing, I pulled into the driveway and then took the bags to the front door. It was a bit of a balancing act, but I was able to do it.

I pushed open the door with my shoulder, balancing a couple of grocery bags. “Lia? You home?” Silence.

Then I heard it-the soft sounds of… something. Shuffling. Rustling. A thump.

Frowning, I kicked my shoes off and followed the noise upstairs. “If you’re hiding and planning to scare me, I’m warning you, I’m armed with a bag of frozen peas.”

When I rounded the corner into her room, I stopped dead.

The sight that greeted me was a little strange, but any werewolf knew what it was. It was completely normal for a pregnant wolf. If anything, I was surprised it hadn’t happened sooner because this usually presented early, even before they showed.

Or maybe it was just in my family.

She was on her knees, surrounded by piles of baby blankets, little onesies, stuffed animals, and at least two unopened diaper boxes. She looked up at me, her hair a mess, cheeks flushed, and hands furiously folding a tiny yellow shirt.

I blinked. “Are you… building a nest?” She glared at me. “I’m organizing.”

I grinned, stepping inside and surveying the chaos. “Organizing into a giant, cozy mountain of baby stuff?” “It’s nota mountain,” she muttered defensively, shoving another soft blanket into the growing pile beside her.

“It’s impressive,” I said, setting the bags down. “Ten out of ten. Very professional nesting instincts. Textbook omega behavior.”

Lia looked at me, glaring. She hated me right now. Or wanted to think she hated me because she was angry. She threw a stuffed bunny at my head. I caught it easily, laughing.

Oh now I wished the other guys were here to see this. They were all out right now, keeping busy. As the only one who was home right now I was stuck with the groceries but I knew it was my turn to do it anyway.

“Shut up,” she grumbled.

“No way. This is way too good.” I picked up a tiny onesie with a cartoon wolf on it, turning it over in my hands. “Are you planning on sleeping in here, too? Because honestly, I’d understand. This pile looks insanely comfortable.”

“Maybe,” she said, half grinning despite herself. “You’re just jealous you don’t have a pile like this.”

I shrugged, still smiling. “Yeah, kind of. Looks pretty cozy.”

She huffed and went back to sorting with single-minded determination.

I leaned against the doorframe, watching her for a second. “Hey. Seriously. If you need anything, anything at all, you let me know, alright?”

She paused, glancing up at me, her expression softening.

“I mean it,” I added. “Food, heavy lifting, punching someone in the face if they piss you off-I’m your guy.” Lia’s mouth twitched like she was fighting a smile. “Thanks, Jesse.”

I tossed the stuffed bunny back onto her pile. “Anytime, nesting queen. Just don’t get so deep in there, we have to dig you out with a shovel.”

She rolled her eyes, but her smile lingered, warm and real.

I knew everything was all right. She was just doing what was natural. Sure, Lia was a little flustered with everything happening so fast, but she was strong.

She was going to be fine.
