had to be calmed down. Apparently, Mr. Lincoln was furious about something that happened yesterday. No one knows what, but it must be serious.”
Adriana’s heart raced at the thought. “What could have happened?” she muttered under her breath, anxiety creeping in. She couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever it was, it had something to do with her.
Eva set the tray down on the coffee table, her expression sympathetic. “I don’t know, but I heard it was about you. Just be careful, okay?”
Adriana nodded, her mind swirling with possibilities. What if Curtis was angry with her? Had she done something wrong? She felt a knot tighten in her stomach as she recalled their last conversation.
The minutes ticked by slowly, each second stretching into an eternity. She glanced at her phone, half-hoping for a message, but nothing came through. Just when she thought she might burst from the tension, the front door swung open.
Curtis stepped inside, his presence commanding the room. He looked exhausted but determined, his jaw clenched as if he were holding back a storm. “Adriana,” he said, his voice low and serious.
“Hey,” she replied, trying to keep her tone light despite the weight of the moment. “You’re back early.”
“Yeah,” he said, closing the door behind him with a soft click. “We need to talk.”
Adriana’s heart sank. “About what? Is it about yesterday?”
Curtis ran a hand through his hair, a gesture she recognized as his way of dealing with stress. “It’s more complicated than that. I need you to trust me.”
“Trust you?” She felt a surge of frustration. “You just left without saying much. How am I supposed to trust that you’re not hiding something from me?”
He stepped closer, his eyes locking onto hers. “I’m not hiding anything. I just… I didn’t want to drag you into this mess.”
“What mess?” she pressed, her curiosity piqued. “You can’t just drop that and expect me to be okay with it.”
Curtis sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “Danielle approached Yolanda. She wanted her to set up a meeting with you. I didn’t want you to get involved in whatever scheme she’s plotting.”
