Cynthia stepped through the Tremaines' front gate and crossed the courtyard, only to spot Juliet standing on the second-floor balcony.
The lights from inside spilled out behind Juliet, casting her face in shadow and making it impossible to read her expression.
Cynthia walked a few steps closer, tilting her head back slightly, her eyes clouded with frustration and defeat.
"Juliet, I didn't finish my assignment."
Juliet looked down at her from above, her face unreadable, her hazel eyes cold and distant.
"It's all right. He'll hire you anyway."
Her voice was calm and resolute, as if everything was unfolding just as she'd expected.
Something in Juliet's assurance steadied Cynthia's nerves.
Juliet's gaze flicked to the brace around Cynthia's neck.
"What happened to your neck?"
Cynthia offered a sheepish smile. "Nothing serious. Slept funny, that's all. Caught a chill, muscles cramped up. It'll pass."
Juliet frowned, her eyes deep and impossible to decipher.
"Make time for a full checkup."
Cynthia nodded. "Sure. Once I start at Holloway Enterprises, I'm sure they'll arrange one. Saves me the trouble—and the expense."
Juliet didn't say anything more. She turned and slipped back inside.
Maybe it was her sister's quiet reassurance, but Cynthia, who had been so uncertain about her new job at Holloway Enterprises, suddenly felt a flicker of hope.
The next morning.
Juliet had just come downstairs when Cynthia emerged from her room, having woken up early just to share breakfast with her sister.
"Morning, Juliet."
Cynthia took the seat across from her, cheerful and bright.
