Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 148

"Why does Mr. Holloway think I don't have it in me?" Cynthia wondered, her tone light but edged with defiance. "There will be plenty of highlights in my life, and I refuse to be defined by VistaSphere Group alone."

She'd poured years of sweat and determination into that company—her fingerprints were on every success. Of course, when she'd discovered Benedict's affair, she'd been a mess of confusion and pain. But people had to look forward, not back.

All those years of hard work were meant to build a better, stronger Cynthia. She wasn't about to let a moderately successful company become her entire world.

Dominic stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, grinding it down with deliberate, repetitive motions.

"And how exactly can you assure me, Miss Tremaine, that when you return to VistaSphere Group, your judgment won't be clouded by a relationship of seven years?" His voice was cool, almost bored, but his eyes narrowed as he looked at her—gray, cold, impenetrable. "After all, that's the man you once chose over your own family."

Cynthia felt her mind go blank for a heartbeat. Ever since the plan had taken shape in her mind, Benedict had never factored into her calculations. Once she set her mind to something, it took more than a person—any person—to shake her resolve. Benedict simply didn't matter anymore.

Dominic watched her in silence, his expression hardening as she hesitated, frost settling in the lines of his face.

Cynthia scrambled for words, needing something convincing—because, after all, she had given up her family for Benedict once, and she needed Dominic to trust her.

"Mr. Holloway—" she began, but he cut her off coldly before she could continue.

"Leave."

She froze, startled by the chill in his tone. "Mr. Holloway, this is ridiculous. Before I even came back to The Capital, I'd already crossed that man off the list of anyone I'd ever consider when making life decisions. So the only thing I feel when you mention him is disgust."

Giving up her family for Benedict was, hands down, the dumbest thing Cynthia had ever done. No argument, no pretty words could change that. Dating him had left an ugly mark on her record, one she regretted more than she could say.
