All four of them eventually found their seats in the private room Jocelyn had reserved.
Dominic kept quiet, casting a subtle tension over the group.
It was Jocelyn who finally broke the silence. With a bright smile, she slid the menu toward Dominic.
“Nick, I ordered a bunch of dishes Cyndi likes. Do you want to add anything for yourself?”
Dominic didn’t even glance at the menu. His tone was mild.
“These all sound good to me.”
Jocelyn grinned and took the menu back, her voice light and casual.
“Seems like you and Cyndi have pretty similar tastes. Makes living together a lot easier, huh?”
Dominic just gave a noncommittal, “Mm.” It was impossible to tell whether he was agreeing they liked the same foods or that they’d make a good pair.
Jocelyn was surprised at how approachable Dominic seemed tonight, so she pressed on.
“My cousin and his wife? When they first got together, they were total opposites when it came to food. But they were so in love, they could overlook those little things. Still, after a while, the cracks started showing.”
She laughed softly. “That’s why I think people who get along well, get along right from the start. Nick and Cyndi? You two are a perfect match.”
Cynthia, hearing this, nudged Jocelyn under the table with her knee, signaling her to stop with the nonsense.
Jocelyn only shot her a mischievous grin, eyes twinkling with “I get you.”
Cynthia could only sigh in defeat.
Assistant Shaw sat with them for a few minutes, but before the food even arrived, he was called away by a phone call. He left his car keys behind as he hurried out.
Jocelyn, still looking for an excuse to slip out herself, was saved by her own phone ringing.
She glanced at the caller ID, arched a brow, then picked up her phone and said softly to Cynthia,
“I’ll just step out for a call.”
Cynthia nodded.
Jocelyn left, closing the door behind her. Instantly, the room—so lively just a moment ago—was left with only Cynthia and Dominic, and the atmosphere turned awkward.
Cynthia took to sipping her water, again and again.
Each time she finished her glass, Dominic quietly refilled it for her.
After several rounds, Cynthia felt like she’d drunk enough to fill her stomach.
