"That's right, I'm going to make a scene!" Margaret yelled. "I'll make sure everyone at your office knows what an ungrateful, heartless person you are, Isabella! Your adoptive parents raised you, and you just kicked us aside. Let's see how you survive at work after this!"
She was more than capable of doing something that shameless.
But Isabella smiled at her mockingly, completely unfazed by her threats. She said lightly, "Then go ahead. No matter what you do, I won't give you a dime."
"Fine! Isabella! Just you wait!" Margaret pointed at her in warning.
Isabella had no intention of responding this time.
Margaret was furious and turned to storm toward Isabella's office.
Isabella had rarely dared talk back to her growing up and had always obeyed her. And now, she actually had the guts to stand up to her. Today, she was determined to teach Isabella a lesson.
Isabella closed her eyes. If Margaret wanted to make a scene, she could do as she pleased. She didn't have three million dollars to give, not even three thousand. Worst-case scenario, she'd quit her job.
"Margaret!" Richard shouted suddenly.
Isabella blinked and opened her eyes to see him getting out of the car, angrily pointing at Margaret like he was ready to confront her.
The sheer force of his shout startled Margaret. She'd already been angry, but this only poured gasoline on the fire.
"What do you think you're doing? Shouting like that! Are you crazy?"
At home, Richard had spent most of his life being ordered around by Margaret, timid and never daring to speak loudly. Today, out in public, he actually grabbed Margaret and started shoving her toward the car.
"Get in. We're going home!"
"Richard! What are you doing?"
He ignored her screams, slammed the car door, and got in the driver's seat.
As he drove off, Isabella could still hear Margaret's frenzied shouting fading into the distance, each curse more obscene than the last. She had no idea why Richard had suddenly appeared, but it couldn't possibly be to help her.
She let out a quiet sigh, feeling even more exhausted. She hadn't had much energy at work these past few days, but at least Alexander wasn't deliberately giving her trouble now, which made things a bit easier.
