Su Qinglan was already tired before they even started moving, but all her beastmen decided they would travel through the night.
Hu Yan said it was safer that way...they could reach the tribe by morning without running into danger.
So she didn’t argue.
She just ended up lying on Rong Ye’s back, clutching his soft fur as he carried her through the dark forest. His body was warm and steady, and the gentle rhythm of his steps made her eyes grow heavier and heavier.
She tried to stay awake at first, but before she knew it, her head dropped against his shoulder, and she was already asleep.
She didn’t even realize when they reached the tribe.
When she opened her eyes again, she was no longer in the forest. She was lying on her familiar stone bed, a thin hide covering her, the faint scent of morning dew and something delicious drifting in the air.
Her mind was still hazy. "Huh...?" she mumbled, rubbing her eyes.
Then she smelled it again...warm, fragrant, and rich food.
She sat up slowly and looked around. Near the fire, Hu Yan was crouched, stirring a pot with a calm, focused face. The golden light from the flames made his tanned skin glow.
"You’re awake," Hu Yan said without looking back. He smiled faintly. "Come, eat something."
Su Qinglan yawned, stretching her arms as she got up. Her hair was messy and her eyes still sleepy, but she walked to him anyway.
Hu Yan leaned over and planted a quick kiss on her cheek before handing her a bowl. "Eat before it gets cold."
She blinked, still half asleep. "We already reached the tribe?"
He nodded. "Mm. We arrived early in the morning. You were asleep the whole way."
Su Qinglan stared at him. "Wait...did you even rest? You traveled all night, Hu Yan. Aren’t you tired? You’re not made of rock, you know."
Hu Yan laughed heartily, shaking his head. "We’ve rested enough. Don’t worry. Rong Ye, Han Jue, and Xuan Long went hunting for breakfast. Only I stayed behind."
Su Qinglan puffed her cheeks a little, still unconvinced, but she didn’t argue more. Instead, she just nodded and went to wash her face. The cold water made her wake up properly. After brushing her teeth with a little salt, she came back and sat beside Hu Yan.
He had already served her a simple meal...some minced beef mixed with herbs and a bit of unknown things. It wasn’t fancy, but it smelled amazing.
She started eating slowly, chewing and chewing until warmth spread through her whole body. Her stomach felt happy again.
Just as she was about to take another bite, hurried footsteps echoed from outside the cave.
She looked up in surprise.
In the next second, a tall man rushed in. His hair was messy and his breathing heavy, but his eyes were full of worry.
