Su Qinglan sat on the stone bed, staring outside the cave. Her eyes were half-open, calm but distant.
She hadn’t spoken a word since they returned.
Suddenly, a shadow moved beside her. Xuan Long stepped closer, and, without saying anything, he wrapped his long arms around her from behind.
She blinked in surprise and looked up at him silently, as if asking what he was doing.
But he said nothing.
Instead, he gently lifted her up and settled her on his lap. He guided her face to rest on his shoulder. One hand patted her back; the other stroked her hair slowly.
"Are you sad?" he asked in a deep, quiet voice.
Su Qinglan shook her head slightly. "No... I’m not."
But Xuan Long only smiled faintly. His fingers lightly tickled her scalp as he kept petting her hair. "You’re very silent," he said softly. "That means you’re sad."
She sighed, her voice low. "I’m not sad... I just feel... strange."
Her fingers twisted in his clothes for a moment before she asked, almost in a whisper, "If a female really abandons a beastman... Will he really become a stray? Even if he did nothing wrong?" 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
Xuan Long went quiet for a while. His emerald eyes darkened slightly as he thought. Then he answered slowly, "Yes. A beastman doesn’t have any other choice. Once abandoned, the anger and pain inside him will eat away at his beast core. Even if he tries to fight it, it will rot... And one day, he’ll lose his mind completely. There’s no escape."
Su Qinglan listened silently. Her eyes lowered.
"So... isn’t that cruel?" she murmured.
Xuan Long looked down at her. "Cruel," he agreed quietly. "But that’s the law of our world."
She shook her head. "I’m not thinking about Luo Chen. I don’t pity him. I just think... it’s too cruel. A beastman’s whole life can be destroyed if a female abandons him. Just because of one choice."
Her heart felt heavy. She wasn’t really sad about Luo Chen’s death... She had seen too many deaths already, but this thought made her uneasy.
Her hand instinctively went to her stomach. She was pregnant now. She had a family here.
And a sudden fear crept into her heart.
What if something the same happens to her cubs one day?
What if they also face something like this?
"No..." she whispered and shook her head quickly. "I won’t let anything like that happen."
Xuan Long heard her soft murmur and rubbed her back gently. "Don’t think too much," he said in his deep, soothing tone. "You’re a good female. You always worry for others. But you have me. You have your beastmen. We’ll protect you."
He bent down and kissed her cheek, then the other side. His voice turned low and tender. "Sleep now. You’ve been working hard all morning. Don’t tire yourself."
Su Qinglan looked at him speechlessly, then gave a small smile. "I’m not tired," she said softly. "Just... worried."
She lowered her gaze. "Hu Yan... he looked so disappointed and angry. After Luo Chen killed himself, I could see it. He must have remembered how he and Father once saved Luo Chen. They were even close before... almost like friends. He must feel guilty."
Xuan Long nodded slowly. "He needs time."
"Yes," she agreed. "He said he had something to take care of and left. But I know he just couldn’t face anyone. He feels responsible, even though he isn’t."
She sighed again. "And Han Jue and Rong Ye still haven’t returned to the tribe either. I wanted to go see them, but I don’t even have the strength today. I just... feel so strange."
Her heart felt heavy.
