“Aunt Jasmine, you really have no idea. Wiona and I went to school together, and she was always so quick with her words. She could twist anything around until people believed something completely different. Look at what she just did to Kyle. He’s just worried about you, Wiona. You should be grateful when someone cares.”
Sanna’s words made Jasmine hesitate. She glanced at Wiona, her voice uncertain. “Is that true, Wiona? Were you really so different at school?”
Wiona stared at Sanna, her eyes cold. “I can’t believe you’d say that. Who’s really twisting things here?”
Sanna put on a show of being scared. “Oh, so now you’re threatening me? Kyle, I told you about what happened back then. What you did for Wiona really scared me. She was always the queen of the school. I never dared mess with her. Did I say something wrong again? Is she going to hit me now?”
“She wouldn’t dare,” Kyle said, his eyes sharp as he looked at Wiona.
Wiona snapped. “That’s bullshit!” She tried to shake Sanna off, but Sanna suddenly threw herself backward, making it look like she’d been shoved hard.
“Ah!” Sanna cried out, landing on the floor. Her face was a perfect picture of hurt and fear. Even Jasmine believed it.
Jasmine glared at Wiona, her voice harsh. “Why do you start trouble the second you get home? Sanna is going to be your sister-in-law. Show her some respect!”
Wiona felt the anger drain away, replaced by a cold calm. She caught the smug little smile Sanna tried to hide and saw Kyle’s warning glare as he helped Sanna up. There was disgust in his eyes.
Kyle’s words were like a slap. “Our grandparents were right about you. You’re nothing but an ungrateful snake.”
Wiona didn’t flinch. “If you already know that, why edid you ven ask me to come back?” Without waiting for a response, she turned and walked straight out of the room.
Jasmine’s voice cracked as she called after her. “Wiona, wait! I was just upset. You don’t have to take it so seriously!” She moved to follow, but Kyle blocked her way.
“Mom, don’t bother with her anymore. She’s Jace’s wife now. She’s so proud of herself, she thinks she’s always right. She acts like we all owe her, like the whole world does. Just let her go.”
