Conrad fixed his eyes on her. “I haven’t fully confirmed it yet. But when the truth comes out, you’re going to be seriously shocked.”
They didn’t get a chance to dig any deeper. Suddenly, the ballroom erupted with noise. Wiona glanced over and, of course, it was Jace and Kellen again. Those two always managed to steal the spotlight, no matter where they went.
Tonight, though, the person butting heads with them caught Wiona completely off guard. It was Taylor.
The three of them were arguing about something, voices growing sharper. Wiona’s eyes sparkled with interest. “Now that’s what I call entertainment.”
Conrad noticed the excitement on her face and immediately walked after her, making sure to shield her from the crowd’s chaos. His tall figure was like a wall, giving Wiona a safe bubble amid the jostling guests.
Some married woman she was. What wife got this hyped up to watch her own husband and his side piece cause a scene? Probably only her, Conrad thought with a sigh.
“Get out of my way!” Taylor snapped at Kellen, his voice rough with anger. “Don’t come over here and ruin my night.”
He was definitely in a bad mood. But Jace wasn’t about to stand by and let anyone embarrass Kellen in front of him. Without warning, he landed a punch right on Taylor’s jaw.
“I gave you a little respect and you actually thought you were important?” Jace sneered. “Taylor Brown, before you throw a fit, maybe you should remember who you’re messing with. Don’t go picking a fight with the Salisbury family.”
The moment Jace said those words, all the fight drained out of Taylor. He stared at Jace, stunned. “Salisbury? You’re with the Salisbury family?”
Taylor took a step back, looking spooked, then spun around and hurried out of the ballroom.
Wiona was floored. Famous artists like Taylor never acted so intimidated by rich kids. What was going on? He’d just been punched and humiliated, and he didn’t even try to fight back.
Right then, Wiona spotted Bronwen, Nicholas, and their friends entering the ballroom. They’d just missed Taylor and were wandering around, scanning the room for him. Wiona’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly spun around and ducked behind Conrad, who managed to shield her completely with his size.
He looked down at her, eyes narrowing playfully. “Is this another one of Ms. Morgan’s accidental closenesses?”
Wiona didn’t even have a comeback.
