Wiona sat at a corner table in the café, glancing at the door every few seconds while she waited for Madison. They had made plans to meet days ago, and she’d been looking forward to this. Not that her nerves would show. She slipped a new SIM card into her phone and tucked the old one away, just in case. The last thing she wanted was for the Salisburys to track her down again.
She was tired of letting herself get pulled back into their mess with fake reports about Grandma Grace’s health, only to end up trapped and powerless all over again. Wiona couldn’t pretend she didn’t feel guilty. Out of everyone, Grandma Grace had always been the one who cared. But she saw it clearly now. The more she gave in, the more Grace tried to control her. Enough was enough. Wiona needed to cut them off, and she hoped Grandma Grace would understand that she’d already given all she could. This was her line in the sand.
As she sipped her coffee, waiting for Madison, the last people she wanted to see showed up. Sanna strolled in with two friends, who were girls Wiona recognized from school. They’d all been part of the same mean-girl crowd, and Wiona still remembered how they used to gang up on her.
She kept her eyes on her phone, hoping they’d just walk by, but instead, they slid right into the seats across from her, smirking.
“Look who it is,” one of them said. “Wiona, you really have some nerve showing your face here.”
Sanna leaned in, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. “Heard your husband’s cheating on you. Kellen’s way cuter than you, if you ask me. Doesn’t matter that you’re prettier. He’d still rather be with her. That’s gotta sting, right?”
Wiona set down her cup and met their eyes, her voice steady. “Did I ask you to join me? This is my table. Please leave.”
The three of them bristled, clearly not expecting her to push back.
“Wow, acting tough for once?” Sanna scoffed. “You’re just a fake who got tossed out by the Morgan family. You think anyone there still cares about you?”
“You used to act so high and mighty. Always getting your brother to handle things for you. Where is he now? Even he can’t stand you, and your husband dumped you. It’s kind of pathetic, honestly.”
Sanna leaned in closer, lowering her voice but not her malice. “I’ll give you some free advice. Get on your knees and lick my shoes clean. Maybe, if I marry your brother, I’ll let him show you a little pity. If not, once the Salisburys kick you out, you’ll be just another stray.”
Wiona didn’t flinch. She picked up her glass of juice and, without saying a word, threw it straight into Sanna’s face.
Juice dripped down Sanna’s hair and onto her designer blouse. She gasped, her face turning red and then white as her embarrassment set in.
